Hello!
I purchased several bags off of Poshmark & Mercari while sleep-shopping (the more expensive form of sleep-walking). I was able to figure out that 2 were fakes thanks to this incredible forum, but I’m still unsure of 3 of them - I’d much appreciate your help with any of them, as I realize 3 is a big ask! FWIW, as someone who used to work in shoe repairs, I am confident they are all actually leather.

#1: Item: “COACH #9086 - Vintage Red Leather Legacy” (No. H9C-9086)
Listing number: m10629606570 (Mercari)
Seller: Abby Tatum
Link:
https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m10629606570/?ref=search_results
Comments: I believe I saw what looked like this exact bag’s creed mark on here, but for some reason I can’t find it again, & I accident closed the window before finding out the verdict. Smh.

#2: Item: Coach Vintage Drawstring Bucket Brown Leather (No. D0D-9165)
Listing number: I do not see listing #s on Poshmark
Seller: @guadis26
Link: https://posh.mk/ddsszi0atW

#3: Item: Coach Purse (green, No. D1280-F19262)
Listing number: again, Poshmark, don’t see one
Seller: @sfulton2015
Link:
https://posh.mk/iu172ZEbtW

Please let me know if you need me to provide more photos. Thank you in advance for whatever help you can offer!

The first one is fake, the serial number's font is wrong

2 and 3 are genuine.

You did see the fake's creed here. I knew it looked familiar and found that IDENTICAL bag in my saved images. You can tell it's the same bag and not just a similar one because both have the mark on the left side of the creed's border.

So after doing a bit of hunting around, I found it. I can't tell whether it was the same Mercari seller. (Original seller was located in Minnesota. I can't tell where Abby Tatum is located.)
@Bananagramz - Where is your seller located?
ETA: It looks like the current seller is in Arizona. She must have bought the fake from Klith and should go after her for a refund.

Hyacinth's reply (with pictures showing the same creed):

And my reply showing that the seller (at the time, Klith on Mercari) was told that the bag is fake:
https://forum.purseblog.com/threads...ost-for-format.889527/page-1154#post-30642747

And then, this post where Klith removed the comment letting her know the bag is fake and her edited listing in which she removed the "Coach" name.

Wow!!!! I am both in awe & beyond grateful, especially for the insanely thorough backstory on #1!!! That was actually the bag that led me here - after one I received was clearly (to me) vinyl, I started really inspecting the rest, and I found the strap on the red was poorly finished... After forum searching helped me identify a J8P and a fake 9098 I really didn’t have hope for ANY of the 3, so I’m thrilled.
2 of the 4 fakes were of high enough quality leather & workmanship that I wouldn’t care - you pay for what you get & learn your lesson for next time - but I have no room for 6 new bags, and I could not in good conscience either sell or donate fake goods.

Despite finding out I got swindled, I actually had a lot of fun doing the detective work! I’m considering getting out Coaches I was gifted now & investigating them just for the fun of it lol.

Pardon the long-winded response, still a bit overwhelmed by your kindness & skill. Y’all deserve capes!

While I commend you for learning and working hard, you should NOT be stuck with the fakes. File disputes and demand your money back. It's illegal to sell fakes whether the sellers knowingly list or make a mistake; it's the seller's responsibility to verify authenticity prior to listing.

I'd open a dispute.

Personally, I wouldn't care how inexpensive the item was nor how "nice" the quality is, I wouldn't want to carry a fake.

And although I don't find Mercari to be responsive to reports of fakes, their policy is in line with the law.
https://www.mercari.com/help_center/article/318

PROHIBITED:
  • Counterfeit goods or goods infringing on a third party's intellectual property rights such as:
    • Listings of non-brand, non-genuine, imitation, fake, or replica
    • Items in violation of a copyright, including handmade, or other items with copyrighted characters, brand logos, etc.
    • Note: For brand-name products, serial numbers or receipts must be available when listing the item.

In your case, further digging found that your seller did purchase the fake from
Klith (Seller) on 11/08/2016 and as I showed, Klith did know the bag was fake and still sold it. I'd be inclined to let Abby Tatum know of our findings and authentication and suggest she approach Klith (who BTW is still on Mercari).

I plan on doing just that. I was so shocked and ashamed that I went on a shopping binge that I blamed myself instead a new flavour of an old sleeping disorder and sellers who were willfully ignorant at best. In an amazing coincidence 2 separate people Said “I was given it by my late mother”.

I have one further favourite to ask, if you all have the time: can anyone verify this as fraudulent based on the listing alone? I found other proof that it was bogus when examining under the flap, similar to another listing here, but I’d like to have all the ammo I can.

I’ll call this #4:
Item: Vintage Coach Bag (No. A9C-9098)
Listing number: m58982320282 (Mercari)
Seller: Jdee95
Link: https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m58982320282/?ref=user_profile

Whether you have time to do this or not, I really appreciate all your help & will post in your Hall of Shame any of these guys who repost, chronically offend, etc. :)

Note that you copied the serial prefix incorrectly; the year made is 1998, not 1999 as you typed. (It doesn't change that the bag IS authentic.)

I agree with Whateve and BeenBurned. Some of the bags in that Tribeca line used some questionable stiffener materials in parts of their line. I had a Tribeca Flap #9092 from the same line that used some odd material to stiffen half of the flap. It wasn't cardboard or the bag wouldn't have been washable. Coach may sometimes make some odd design and material choices, but the creed photo I'm looking at tells me it's genuine. It looks like one of the bag's owners tried to remove that stiffening material for some reason and did a lousy job of it.

You are correct. It's fake. Among other things, 012-3445 is a known and invalid serial number.
