I'm assuming that's the same for the Scout as well? (sorry for asking so many questions)

IYO, which is the better "find?"
Have you read the Salearea Guides? They are very informative with tons of excellent information about Coach's creed and serial number history. I don't know how to provide a link to the guides but you can do a search and they should come right up. There is so much information that I've had to read them repeatedly but I find them very helpful. Of course questions are always welcome here, but reading the guides might help you to be able to weed out some fake bags right away. They will definitely help you to become a more savvy shopper. I highly recommend that you read them if you haven't already....and read them again if you have.

I am no expert but since Coach didn't begin using style numbers until 1994 then no authentic Coach bag will have a style number if it was made before 1994, regardless of the style.

Item: Tan Coach City Bag (#9790, 2002)
Seller: Hospital Charity Thrift Shop ($14)
Dimensions: 9" high, 11" wide, 3.5" deep
Comments: Please give an opinion on authenticity, thank you. The bag is a tan color but it looks a bit lighter than British Tan - I guess I will have to see what color is turns out to be after rehabbing!

Thanks again!

There have been a lot of variations in what Coach called British Tan over the years, but like you said, a dunking will probably change the color's appearance. Even though Coach had introduced some new lighter tan shades right around 2000, this is probably still BT because it has brass-color hardware. The newer lighter tan shades like Camel or Birch would probably have had nickel hardware.

Advice for a new member - you don't need to use the REPLY button and reply to someone else's post just to post a new question. Go to the most recent page of posts and right underneath all the posts is a blank space with "POST REPLY" right underneath it. Start typing your question at the top of that open space and when you're completely finished, click on the "post reply" button to post.

Comment: I'm pretty sure this bag is fake. Can I still report? What happens to the buyer? This was sold back in February.

I have several comments:
  • I don't think the pictures of the bag shown are adequate for authentication
  • I would never recommend reporting if I were only "pretty sure" it was fake. I only report if I am 100% positive that it's fake.
  • I do report known completed/sold fakes when I find them and hope that the buyers will ask questions once they receive notification of the listing's removal.
  • If the buyer questions it, she has 180 days to open a Paypal dispute if necessary
And specifics re the listing:
  • The tag font is wrong and the tag is likely fake
  • There's a misspelling (missing letter) on the paperwork

While I wouldn't have recommended that a buyer purchase it, I wouldn't have reported either.

Other opinions are welcome.

Another comment:
Were these bags out in 2017? This listing shows a (questionable?) receipt with a Sept. 22, 2017 date:

Another comment: if you report a listing that ended a month ago, ebay wouldn't inform the buyer.

Huh. Good to know. Sucks for the buyer.

Thank you for your help. I haven't reported even though I have yet to see a genuine NASA dinky with the kisslock hardware in the wrong direction.

Good point, I have seen some unusual shades of City Bags with nickel hardware. This bag is just probably dry and faded and it will get back that rich BT color with rehabbing, thanks!
