IMPORTANT READ-ME

Please post authenticity questions related to COACH in this thread. No PMs please.
For further information, please refer to the first post on page 1 of this thread.

Please follow the following requests:
  • Before you submit a request for authentication, please search this thread to make sure that the item has not previously been authenticated by searching the seller ID and/or item number. This is not a thread to ask general questions about COACH, please refer to our main Coach forum for such information.
  • Note that authenticators have the right to refuse any requests. This is a free service, but it is imperative that you help our authenticators by using the following format:
  • FOR ITEMS LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Listing number:
    Seller and site where listed
    Link:
    Comments:

  • FOR ITEMS NOT LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Where purchased or how obtained
    Comments:
BASIC PICTURES REQUIRED (but more may be requested): If necessary pictures are in the listing, it's not necessary to upload and duplicate them.
  • Front of item
  • Back of item
  • Full clear and legible creed text and serial number
  • Made in tags (when available)
  • Measurements
  • For bags with turnlock closures, show pictures of back of female side of turnlock
  • For bags with magnetic snaps, show pictures of the male part of the snap so that the numbers and letters on it can be read
  • If applicable, search interior of bag and/or pockets for small white tag with production information and include a picture of that.
Thank you and be safe!

Can you please confirm that this bag is inauthentic?

Confirmed!

BTW, was that bag listed online? Please post a link and info as per post 1, page 1.

Would you mind describing why so I can prove my case?

Where did you buy it, and when? That makes a difference in what arguement you use to prove it's genuine. We also need to see the original listing.

We're serious about requiring all that information up front when we authenticate, we're not just being nosy.
I’m a little embarrassed because I got over excited and submitted an offer for the bag before fully examining it or asking for more photos. Here is the information:

Purchased on Poshmark February 9th. https://posh.mk/MvdC18OmkU

You might have a problem. Because of Poshmark's awful history of not acting on reports of fakes and their "authenticators" poor history of recognizing fakes (as well as authentic items), I don't authenticate requests of listings on that site and I don't recommend shoppers shop there.

Because the fake bag seems to match the Willis style that it's copying, Poshmark is likely to side with the seller in your dispute and not recognize that it's fake. (In fact, one of the ladies here who might out herself bought a fake there, lost the dispute, submitted the fake bag for PM to evaluate it in person and they still denied it was fake!)

Problems -- there are lots of them but the creed comp should be enough if their "team" knows what to look for:
  • The serial number has the wrong font for the 1996 D plant
  • The back of the female side of the turnlock has indentations that shouldn't be there
  • The flap with the female turnlock portion is too long and the padding is incorrect.
  • The trim on the handle should taper more at the ends.

Thank you so much! I have learned a lot on this page and unfortunately was careless in my research into this particular bag before purchasing. I really appreciate the work you all do and will keep my fingers crossed that the case will be approved. If not, I'll use this bag to educate others!

I was afraid you were going to say that. Poshmark can be an absolute B!TCH to get a refund from, no matter how good your proofs are. You may end up having to get a professional authentication (use Authenticate4U, their Coach expert(s) are familiar with these kinds of details). We recommend that members never buy a preowned Coach unless there are enough of the right kind of photos in the listing to authenticate it. Please let us know what happens.

1- Coach has never used turnlock assemblies in their handbags where the back of the oval plate has indentations for the prongs.

2- the font used in the serial number is completely wrong for the plant and year indicated in the number. The underline under the "o" in "No" is much too long and the entire font is wrong, below is a serial number from a GENUINE bag with a J6D- prefix (indicating it was made in the "D" plant in September 1996). The seller watermark belongs to one of the most trusted sellers on Ebay who ONLY sold genuine Coach. Note the "No" underline length and the very distinctive "squared-off" number font that was used by Coach for their C and D plant bags in the 1990s. The various lines above the numbers were made by Coach's special stamping mechanism that used small revolving wheels for each digit. It also has the Factory Outlet bulls-eye stamp in the upper right corner. Be sure to send a copy of the creed photo you took to Poshmark since the seller didn't include it in the listing.

Hi, everyone, I don't have anything to authenticate right now, but I just wanted to say thank you. I know I'm guilty of skipping off with my new authenticated coach, and forgetting to be grateful for all the work that everyone puts in to find answers for us. I definitely appreciate all of your services here to us new collectors. Thank you again and always from the bottom of my little coach loving heart. :hbeat:

Thanks for the kind words, they're very much appreciated! :hugs:

Here is the response from the seller: "@slymeceb says "Good morning Please return no problem. However, I purchased this bag from Coach years ago. It was my gift to myself when I graduated nursing school. No worries at all. I do regret that you weren’t pleased with the purchase."'

Not sure that Poshmark will proceed, but she's willing to accept the return (and hopefully she'll burn the bag).

If the seller is willing to accept the return, that's a good first step. I do doubt that she'll burn the bag and based on her (dishonest) assertion that she bought it from Coach, my guess is that she'll probably resell it.

But since you'll be made whole, that's a good thing.

I doubt it - she already lied about where she bought it so I'm not expecting a sudden wave of honesty to overcome her greed. She should also PAY for the return - why should you have to dig into your pocket to return a fake? The shipping will probably be more than the original price of the bag.

And, cynic that I am, I can't help wondering if she sold it at least once before and it was returned as a fake. That could be why there aren't any photos in the listing of the creed and serial number. It sure wouldn't be the first time we've seen that happen. Just speculation, of course...

Authentic and from 2009.

Thank you so much! I found the hang tag in the zipper pocket after I purchased it. :D

Everyone here has always been so helpful! I got over the Coach Fever I experienced with SO MANY (so badly priced) bags at the goodwills, and you were all SO patient with me, but the last couple of days I have found a few in the regular $3.99 handbags area, and it's so helpful and reassuring to have this resource available!

You rock!

I purchased this cute cross body bag at the thrift store. It's cute and appears to be made of real leather. Can someone confirm for me whether this is real or not. I can't find the exact same style online anywhere.

Welcome! It's an authentic compartment bag #9850 if it measures approximately 9 1/2 inches by 6 inches. it was made in the early 90s.

I so appreciate this thread! I have just started reading and am 40 pages in. This bag raised a nagging concern for me in that the creed picture shows a misaligned serial number, particularly the last three digits. The numbers seem to be slanted. Is this a quirk of the Coach stamping mechanism or a red flag? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Co...ful/254116428598?_trksid=p2485497.m4902.l9144
Welcome to TPF.

The bag is authentic and yes, the marks are from the stamping mechanism on which there was a dial where numbers were turned by hand. If the numbers weren't perfectly aligned, parts of the numbers above and/or below were shown in the stamping. (There are fakes with bogus overstamps and understamps so be aware.)

For future requests, please refer to post 1, page 1 for the posting format and information to post in your request.
