  • If applicable, search interior of bag and/or pockets for small white tag with production information and include a picture of that.
Thank you and be safe!

Keep in mind that a fake won't rehab like a Coach. The leather just won't respond like it should. If you decide to keep it, destroy the creed so it won't ever be sold as a Coach. If it were me, I would contact the seller. I don't think anyone should get your money for a fake.

ETA: Did you just buy it today? Ask the seller to cancel the sale and refund your money.

Thank you for the info - I *did* just buy today. Was willing to give rehab a shot even if a fake but I did just request the seller refund my money. I hate asking anyone for help so posting on here pushed my out of my comfort zone but I’m glad I did. Thanks so much! I’m so, incredibly appreciative. Will ask again before buying. I’ve tried to search for good reference guides - are there any or should we just rely on your trusty guidance? Thanks again!

Seller is refusing to refund money - sorry to be a moron but how do I prove it’s counterfeit/file a claim? Is there a resource on here? And *this* is why I never buy used stuff... Sigh. Edited to add: they ended up canceling/refunding. Ugh. Such a pain!

There are guides that help but it takes a really long time to learn how to authenticate and sometimes there are just little differences that aren't explained in any guide. Beware that there are also guides with wrong information. It's best if you just ask us.

Good they finally refunded. It's good to authentic first before purchase so you don't have to deal with this again. But don't worry, a buyer doesn't have to prove it is counterfeit. Just open a return request for not as described and select doesn't seem authentic. I've never heard of a case where the buyer didn't get refunded for a counterfeit, as long it was done in a timely manner.

Bought this bag because I liked the size/style and it fit what I was willing to spend - found this page after researching how to rehab it (oh boy, did I start down a road of fun...) but now wondering if it’s real or not. (Again, no big deal if not since I like it and will enjoy it (and the process of trying to restore it) but though it would be fun to ask.). Thanks so much in advance!

Item: Vintage Coach Leather Crescent Berkeley Saddle

Comments: Creed appears to be M7C-9988

The serial number font isn't right, the too-wide spacing of some of the creed words is wrong, there's a problem with the size and shape of the strap buckles - DON'T invest any more time in it unless you just want to practice on a bag that is as fake as a 3-dollar bill. Sorry. Since you already started to rehab it, it can't be returned to the seller but I believe you can still file SNAD claim for counterfeit merchandise with Ebay.

ETA - there's also a problem with the back of the turnlock.

Here's a genuine style 9988 and a genuine creed and serial number with an M7C- prefix, note the spacing problem mentioned earlier:

I assume you told chrislchoi why you were canceling and requesting a refund, right?

If that's the case, knowing it's fake, giving you a hard time when requesting a refund and then RELISTING the same bag, she deserves appropriate feedback, IMO.

Even if she didn't know it was fake when first listed, now she knows! And that's dishonest!

Here's the relisted bag that chrislchoi has posted.

I bought a coach charlie backpack from a seller who claimed its authentic. She said its brand new. When i received it, the dustbag is too small for the backpack and the tag is confusing. The serial number is right but the description is different.

Sorry im new here.
I bought it from an online seller but i dont have a link to her page.
Item name: coach charlie backpack
Serial number: F38301

If you found it online, I'm not sure why there's no link to that listing. Presumably you found her somehow.

The reason we need to see where the items were purchased (or if a store/thrift shop, etc) is because see the seller, history and online listings gives insight into the seller's history, reputation and possibly honesty.

Additionally, there are some countries that we recommend against purchasing from because the fakes are extremely close.

If you're unable to furnish a link to the listing and seller, personally, I'd return the bag. These are my concerns:

1. The tag has incorrect style description, incorrect color code, style number indicating a full-priced item (not made for the factory outlets), incorrect UPC code and wrong price. (There's probably more wrong with the tag but that's a start.)
2. From what little I've been able to find on style 38301, it seems to be a smaller version of the bag than what you received. I can't confirm this though.
3. Based on the markings on your bag, it is a MFF (made for factory) bag and wouldn't have come with a dust bag so either the seller used a replacement dust bag, a fake dust bag or she lied if she claimed the bag came from a full -priced coach store.

May I ask what country the seller is in?

She is a seller on facebook. She is from the philippines, she said a relative who stays in the US bought it. She claims her coach bags are bought from outlet stores in the US.

That's exactly what I suspected. That's why I asked for the seller's country.

If you search "Philippines " and "Filipino sellers" you'll find many posts referring to the scary close fakes coming out of that country.

Knowing that the seller is located there and based on the problems I mentioned earlier, I'm 100% positive that the bag is fake.

How about this one:

Thanks so much in advance!
That one is fake too.

ETA: Be very careful. Of late, I've been finding more fake 9988s than authentic.

ETA #2: Here's a genuine one if you're interested:

Thank you! That was going to be my next question - if anyone knew of any real ones! I’d really like to try my hand at fixing one up (I’m too terrified to “dunk” any of my “good” bags and was hoping to find one for a little cheaper to play with but I might just have to bite the bullet and get one since I seem to be terrible at spotting fakes!) Thanks for your help!

I noticed that too, there's a red one at Ebay's Fashion Board. So that's 3 just in the last week. Some of the serial number fonts are very close so authenticating every one is really important.

The Ebay Fashion Board post has several good comparison pics of both the VERY close serial number fonts between the fake and several real ones, and also a close-up of the problematic indentations on the back of the fake's turnlock plate:
