The Daria48 Fake Numbers List indicates that all J month codes with 1998 year codes with P or Y plant codes are fake and we've mentioned here many times that the last H code was in early 1998 and ONLY if it was in a very specific font. The serial number above is the last VALID *8H- prefix and apparently only used for Sample bags and emergency production runs at the old NYC plant location, and the H plant code was retired some time in 1998. All H plant codes with 1999 year codes and newer are fake. Valid 1998 H plant codes should be in a larger font than the rest of the serial number.

We've also mentioned that Taft Bags are highly faked, and should always be authenticated before buying. There are probably other problems but the seller's photos in the original listing are useless for determining authenticity. It even looks like the "9" year code in the serial stamp may have been modified from an "8".

Get your money back.

Last week, in the course of a google search, I came across this "guide" and laughed when I saw it because clearly, based on all the fakes we've (un)authenticated here both on their own websites and on ebay, Goodwill doesn't have a clue on what makes bags authentic! (And it appears that the author of the goodwill guide "borrowed" some of her information from Ebay's Daria48 and/or from TPF's Coach subforum!)
How to authenticate Coach bags | Get It Goodwill

Hello! Brand new to The Purse Forum. I've been lurking over on the rehab and rescue threads for Coach and Hermes, learning all sorts of fun stuff about caring for and refreshing leather. I decided to try buying a lovely bag on eBay, but I really should have posted here first for authentication. Only after I just now joined was I able to use the search feature. I searched for this seller, and I see she's got quite a history of posting/selling fakes on eBay. I also should have asked for more pictures before deciding to bid/buy. It is in my possession now, and I would greatly appreciate an opinion in regards to authenticity.

Item: Kristin silver/gold crossbody/shoulder bag convertible
Listing number: 372441204065
Seller: 1busymomof4
Link: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/372441204065
Comments: size is approx 11" x 12"
Not many photos on the listing. So attempting to attach some of my own pictures.
The creed patch is just about as illegible in person. I took a bunch of pictures at different angles, but this is the best I could get.
Also some pictures of the interior and sides where the straps and strap rings are attached.

If anyone has a moment to take a look and offer an opinion on authenticity, I would greatly appreciate any assistance!

Welcome to tPF!

You were lucky this time. Although the seller does have a checkered history, this particular bag is genuine. It's a Kristin Hobo made in 2010.

We strongly recommend that no one bid on or buy any Coach bags where the seller doesn't show a clear readable photo of the creed patch, stamp and serial number if the bag has one.

Yep, and if you scroll through the replies to around February 2014, you'll see that someone tried to correct a few of the mistakes and tell posters where to go for answers, but as always, it was a losing battle. :graucho:

After contacting GW recently about a fake red willis (politely, of course) and posting the link here confirming it, my ticket was responded to with a thank you and was promptly closed. The auction continued and the bag was sold for over $80. Anyone bidding at at the online GW site is warned!

I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have brought a coach bag and I honestly cannot find it anywhere online. I just want to know if it’s genuine coach. Would you be able to look at it and tell me what you think?

Below I have attached some photos, I’m sorry some of them are not the best quality as some of the stamps are small.

Thank you,
Shaunasakura

WHEW!! It's good to be lucky as a newbie! Thank you! I SHOULD know better, and should likely have passed on that one due to lack of clear pictures. But I was distracted by the pretty silver finish of the leather... Then it arrived in the mail, the creed patch was illegible, and the stitching half undone in the interior slip pockets. And I thought, "WHAT have I done?!?" If it's authentic, it's worth getting the stitching repaired.

Thanks for the info on the year too! Great to know!

  • If the bag in question is not on an auction site, please use the following:

Item Name (if you know it):
    Link (if available):
Then attach any photos (all authentication must include photos.)
    • Please be sure to include a clear readable photo of the creed stamp and serial number from inside the bag or accessory if there is one, and the bag's measurements when the bag is an older or vintage leather Coach.
    • Since mid-2014, Coach stopped putting serial numbers on creeds so in newer bags where the creeds don't have serial numbers, we also need to see pictures of the labels/tags from inside the bag. They are either both in the main open part sewn into the seam of the lining, or one might be buried deep inside the zipper pocket. One shows where made and the other has a serial number.
