I would like to kindly request authentication for this bag. I've had it for some years but I never carry it. I think I might sell it because it is silly just living in my closet.

As I was starting to prep it for eBay (because I've never used the fancier consigner shops), I noticed an oddity in the serial number. Actually, I had noticed it in the past, but since I never use this purse, I had forgotten that it got my attention previously.

It looks like a serial number was added. I don't think the color change is as dramatic with my eye, but it jumps out at you with a flash photo. Also, it's not just a heat stamp, it appears to be glued. I've never tried pulling on it to confirm. Well, I've kind of tried to put my fingernail underneath it and it doesn't feel glued on, but it looks it. What the heck is going on? I'm sure I could give it a tug, but I don't want to.

The bag is brown, like the heat stamp picture, not black as it appears in the second picture.

I think I've seen this style before. It feels like an authentic Coach. everything about it seems authentic, except the serial number. I'm sooooo curious.

Many thanks!

It's authentic. It looks like a basic bag. There was a time when Coach used glued in serial numbers. No one knows for sure, but I believe it was between 1979 and 1983, when the production increased so much that there was a bottleneck at the stamping machine, and this was their way to deal with it. This stamp is unique in that it has the registered trademark symbol that Coach did away with when Sara Lee bought the company.

(It's nice to see someone ELSE get sniped for a change!)

katgoldatx, if you list it anywhere, be sure to use the term "vintage" in the listing title. Since it's more than 20 years old it definitely qualifies as vintage, and many buyers of classic and vintage bags specifically search for that word when shopping.

BeenBurned was correct - I got notified of the refund being credited to my account today and it is already reposted for sale on TRR site.

Sorry I quoted wrong - this was in relation to the embossed "travel bag" (crossbody). This is the listing on TRR:

https://www.therealreal.com/product...-leather-shoulder-bag-aPQZ2tLdOeo-3cAChE4YTtg
I wish I’d been wrong.
Now we KNOW that TRR aka therealreal doesn’t do the right thing even if the original error was a mistake. (And I also wonder whether all their “mistakes” were “honest” ones.)

I doubt it.

Happily, TRR has authorized a return and will pay return shipping - they didn't even ask for pictures or additional information and sent a nice note of apology. I am still feeling a bit flummoxed myself as I was almost completely fooled, but upon realizing one thing didn't seem right, I started to see the other things, too. Really thankful to those that take the time to provide their expert opinions on here!

Genuine and made in 2005 but I don't know the name.

Wait for advice on cleaning, or check the Rehab and Rescue thread in the Coach clubhouse forum at the main Coach page.

Hi -
I recently came across this purse and I need help authenticating. I have several coach purses in this style, but this is the only one that doesn't have the coach marking. The only stamp I could find was a star 202? It feels just like my other penny bags in workmanship and quality. Could it be that the silver coach stamp could have fallen out? I've also never really seen this sage green color.

Several things that our other vintage experts can clarify if I'm wrong -

I'd like to see a better photo of the strap clip, it doesn't seem right. A clip-on strap was a newer addition and it seems like a bag new enough to have a clip-on would also have a creed stamp.
I've never seen a Coach turnlock stamped Solid brass.
A sage green color would be VERY unusual on a vintage Coach.
I don't see any indication of any kind of Coach identification. If the metal plaque had fallen out there should still be small holes (plural) from the plaque in the leather.
The stamp on the inside is probably from the leather SUPPLIER, not the bag maker. Italian suppliers used that kind of marking.

I don't think it's a Coach, but Whateve needs to take a look. She may suggest posting in the Vintage Photos and Chat thread
Waiting for more opinions.
