Now, I'm also looking to authenticate this Coach...although I'm 99.999% sure it's fake. It's sad because I bought it on Etsy without realizing that these old original bags were ever knocked off. The seller insisted it was authentic, but she gave me most of my purchase price back anyway. I'm happy enough with it as a "user," but am irked about the whole deal. I was aware of the fakes into the 2000s, but had not idea it was going on even earlier. I just wanted to learn myself what to look for, as I would love to start collecting these old beauties. I'm often seeing them in thrift stores and really need to know the key points to look for. Thanks in advance!

You’re corrrct. It’s fake.

Just so you know, just because a bag is a classic style, it wasn’t necessarily made in the past. Many of the vintage style fakes are being made now. Fakes have always been around and as long as there’s money to be made, they’ll continue to be made.

Gotcha. Can you tell me the things in this bag that tell you it's a fake? I just want to have the knowledge for future reference.

Gotcha. Can you tell me the things in this bag that tell you it's a fake? I just want to have the knowledge for future reference.
The most obvious thing is the shape of the padding above the turnlock. It should curve around the top of the turnlock. There is a rectangular imprint around the creed number. You wouldn't ever see that on an authentic bag because of the type of stamping mechanism they used. The creed number appears to start with "JG" - there should only be one letter at the beginning of a creed, followed by one or more numbers.

There are other red flags too - this is a good example of a recently made fake trying to be a vintage bag. The year code is for 1994, but the bag says it's made in China ((Coach didn't make classic leather bags in China until 1999 AFAIK), the creed wording isn't right, not just for 1994, but it even says it was made from "the finest materials TRIMMED with genuine leather". When the creed doesn't describe the bag's construction correctly it's probably fake. And that "committment to enduring quality" line in the creed from what I can find wasn't even introduced until mid-1998 at the earliest. There are also problems with the serial number fonts and the hardware. Most of this isn't in any "guide" BTW, the only way to get these kinds of details regarding dates is from a saved library of thousands of photos of both fake and genuine Coach items.

FramerKat, there are hundreds of potential warning flags in older fakes. There's no single template the fakes makers used, every one has to be analyzed on its own merits - or demerits. The Salearea Guides thread, posts 14 to 25, give some basic information on what makes a Coach genuine or fake, but there's NO way any single guide or thread could ever include all that information.

The only safe thing to do is to authenticate purchases here before you buy, make sure you buy from sites that stand behind their items and are proactive about removing reported fake AND refunding for any that anyone buys - ask here if you're not sure who does and who doesn't. If you buy from brick-and-mortar stores, make sure they have a policy of full refunds for fakes.

Wow. I had no idea that fake vintage styles are currently being made. Thanks for bringing that up. As if there aren't enough old fakes out there!!
