If those are the ONLY letters and numbers on the bottom of the creed stamp or patch, it's fake. Genuine Coach serial numbers NEVER have only 4 or 5 numbers as the entire serial number. And I don;t have any record of any Coach handbag with a style number that started with 87**.

In fact according to the notes I've made over the years, items with 4-number style numbers starting with 87** are all stationary items and small personal electronics from the late 1990s such as notebooks, refills, PDAs, organizers, etc.

BTW, please read post number One in this thread. We normally require a full set of photos to authenticate any "Coach" but the serial number you posted in your question is so wrong for a handbag or for any Coach that no photos are needed in this case.

ETA - here's a thumbnail of 2 items with very close style numbers, 8717 and 8724 from the 1997 Holiday catalog, a refillable Organizer and a desk diary:

Looking a bit more, #8722 is a calfskin Pocket Diary. 8720 is a wallet-organizer combo.

Hey, it's easy to get confused between those 2, the only apparent difference is the strap length and the removable long strap on the Satchel, and having such similar numbers just adds to the confusion. The Legacy Satchel turned out to be the more popular style and it got faked a LOT.

Thank you Hyacinth and BeenBurned! This is so helpful. I'm fascinated by the history of all these bags. Appreciate your sharing the information!

It's a genuine Soho Small Satchel from 1998.

ETA - And for the Old Fogies among us, here's another example of our favorite saying, "The only consistent thing about Coach is their inconsistency". A "satchel" by most definitions has 2 short handles and is usually meant to be hand-carried, see the pics from today's earlier posts. I and probably any normal SANE person would have called this style 4106 single-strap-attached at the corners-bag a HOBO. But NOOOOOOOOOOO-OOO! (apologies to John Belushi, to continue the SNL references) For some reason known only to them and to the Powers running the universe, Coach called it a Satchel.

It's a wonder we Coachies have any hair left, logic would seem to indicate that we should have all torn ours out by the roots now in frustration.

I agree-
This is nuts - a "satchel?" Nonetheless, I love having the proper name for it. thank you!!!

Welcome, @Special-Kay.

I'd really like to see pictures of your bag, if for no other reasons, to see another picture of the bag and creed with an invalid serial number.

Welcome, @Special-Kay.

I agree. Not only would it help us to see photos of the bag, but it might help you too. You mentioned that "From what i have read on here about real or fake coach purses mines real" but with a problematic serial number like that there's a good chance that there are other problems with the bag that we can point out so that you can watch for those other red flags in the future.

Please don't try to do your own authentications based only on what you read here. There are a lot of details in fakes that we don't mention because it gives the fakes makers a convenient list of the mistakes in their fakes that need to be fixed. There are one or two details in bags and wallets from 10 or 12 years ago that we've never discussed in public because we still see the occasional older fake with those mistakes and we're not about to give a dishonest seller an easy hint on how to make their fake seem more genuine. And many red flags we talk about here involve using clear readable photos to authenticate, especially creed stamps and serial numbers. Even small details in creeds can prove something is fake but it's usually not the kind of detail most readers here will be able to remember for use in the future. That's why we strongly recommend authenticating Coach items here BEFORE buying. I hope you can get your money back for the one you bought.

You authenticators are providing such a valuable service here. Thank you.

Some of the fakes out there are super convincing. A friend who worked for Coach in New York for 5 years was visiting from out of town a few weeks ago. We were at a "posh " resale type store poking around and she pointed out a "Coach Edie" that looked great but said was as phony as could be. I have two real Edies and when she started pointing things out to me, it was pretty obvious, actually but superficially the bag looked great and was being sold for a substantial price.

I have learned a lot I think from lurking here too. Thanks!

Hi! Found this while thrifting. Could someone please take a look?

Thanks!

This bag has a couple of oddities that I'm curious about. Please offer opinions. TIA.

1. I can't find any other L plant bag from 1994
2. The front (female) tab is longer than on other Willises.
3. The font is slightly different from a comp creed from the same plant (but different year)
4. In comparison with other L plant creeds (but from 1996), the plant code is positioned lower than the month code, whereas on the creed of the bag in question, it's even with the year code.

It looks ok, here are 2 others from 1994. The plant and month codes could be at different positions (slightly higher or lower) depending on how the stamping mechanism was set, that's not a problem. Both of the ones below also have the same extra-long hyphen between the 2 halves of the serial, the underscore in "No" slightly off-center, and one of these also has an outlet stamp.

ETA - The turnlock tab just looks like they punched the hole for the turnlock about a quarter-inch higher than the others, the actual overall length of the leather tab itself could still be the same.
