You're right, a tag never means it's authentic because many fakes especially newer styles often come with fake tags too.

But in this case you were very lucky. It's a genuine Prairie Bag made in 1996.

And if you look closely you'll see that the color is blotchy and already faded in places, it's "taken" differently on different parts of the leather, and there's no color at all on the unfinished leather on the inside of the bag.

Beware of "pretty" colors and pastels on classic and vintage leather bags. Coach did make some in pastels and some Sohos in brighter colors, but shades like bright aqua or turquoise or bubble-gum pink are NOT genuine Coach colors. While bright colors might have sometimes been used in lines like the Sohos, it's unusual to find them on genuine classic styles like this. And I've seen quite a few fake "Patricia's Legacys" in a bright pink that was NEVER used by Coach until after the move to China, and even then NEVER on Pat's Legacy bags..

And the fakes almost always have a variety of invalid serial numbers, like the one you found in that Ebay listing. "BIN" seems to be another favorite fake prefix with the non-Coach-colors makers.

That info is important because I become smitten with the colors. I have seen red chinese made duffels that I have so far resisted and I bought that blue Waverly and lime Buckle you guys authenticated for my nieces.
This one I had tagged and had to hunt it down in history. It is not my bag and I did not buy this one, but I have an identical one in this light sky blue and the creed on this one and mine are exact with run together words "REFLECTOUR"
Is this bag authentic with that creed or is it a colored fake?
There are no pictures but both buckles have COACH stamp with Coach rectangle on mine and I assume on this too, because everything else is identical down to color of leather and stitching.

That one is authentic. (But it's not a classic/vintage bag. It's from 2005.)

As a follow up, Mercari quickly approved my 'not as described' return of this painted bag! Finding paint on the hardware probably sealed the deal.

As BeenBurned already pointed out, that is a China-made bag, and I excluded those from my comments about bright colors. "Vintage" means at least 20 years old, and "classic", although it doesn't have an official definition, to most of us probably means PRE-China leather styles or bags made before the year 2000. Leather bags made after 2000 in China and other Asian countries came in a wide range of colors. Classic and vintage bags usually didn't.

"Classic" and "vintage" to us Old Bags mean NOT made in China or the Far East.
