Comments: One strap and the flap pocket are black, while the rest is brown?? The black strap feels newer and stiffer than the normal one, but it's the right width.

The bag is authentic. I haven't a clue about the odd colors. Usually if a bag has been dyed, the pocket will be the original color, but you can't usually put a lighter color dye over black. Does the inside suede look black or brown?

Thank you! Ok, now I'm pretty convinced this bag started out black and faded to olive green. The suede looks more black than brown to me. The outside looks green next to true browns/tabac. What do you think - am I imagining this?

What do you think of this one? Ideas re what it's coated with are welcome, too. Thank you! [emoji846]
P.s. Do you think it's navy? [emoji23]

Comments: good pic of the stamp was impossible due to leather coating, only 1 buckle says solid brass, false strike for 1 grommet hole, any idea re the gigantic 'Navy'?? Seems like the unusual zipper/rivet details might be correct (?)

ETA: approx measurements are 15.25 x 13.5 x 9

I've never seen one without an inside pocket before. RL Bernstein posted some pics last year of a very early Duffle Sac estimated to be from around 1969 and even that one with the different strap placement that was on the oldest versions still had an inside pocket. It also had the "inset" base with the separate ring of piping around it, like every other Duffle Sac I've ever seen..And is the Coach stamp actually on the outside of the bag? I've never seen that before.

And is "solid brass" stamped on the TOP surface of the buckle? It looks like it's on the underside where it should be in at least 2 photos but on the top surface in the 7th photo. (The rivets look really strange to me too but I don't own or collect older vintage or Cashin-era bags).

Whateve and RL Bernstein need to take a look at that one. I'm not comfortable with it or with trying to guess if it's ok.

Here are a few pics of that early one:

From the looks of it, it is a first version Duffle Sac (probably from 1972). This version (with the riveted on buckle tabs, the finished (no binding) lower seam, and no interior pocket) was made for only a couple of seasons (initially with a exterior metal tag and subsequently with similarly located cartouche imprint). It was replaced with the second design iteration (which had the body seam rotated midway between the riveted buckle tabs, a bound lower seam, and an interior slip pocket with cartouche imprint as shown in Hyacinth's posting's photos). That version also was made for only a limited amount of time and was in turn succeeded by the version of the #9085 Duffle Sac as we know it today (vertical seams aligned with integrated roll-over buckle tabs and a bound lower seam).

A very, very good find. I've been looking for one of these. If you ever decide to move it along, please keep me in mind.

That's a pretty thorough history for the Duffle Sac and its details - thanks so much! :flowers:

Wow, RLB, now I'm almost afraid to touch it! I had found examples of each of the versions you mention but it's so great to have the whole succession story. Thanks so much for sharing and helping me understand where this one fits. You'll be top of mind if I ever decide to part with it.

And just to give another point in the evolution to the #9085 Duffle Sac, here's a photo from a 1969 runway show of the Large Bucket Bag (? not sure what the real name is) that may have started the ball rolling...
