It is an authentic shoulder sac #9730 from the late 80s. I love this style! There are problems with some of the rivets on these bags.

Cool, she will be so happy! Could you share what the rivet problem is?
Thanks whateve!

On some of them, which I believe might be the earlier produced ones, the rivets didn't hold. I bought one that needed the rivet replaced and I've seen a few on ebay with a similar problem. I have another one that has held up fine. I think yours is probably fine too. Some of the bad ones I saw had the rivet too close to the seam.

Would you please remind me when the Lightweight line was first introduced? I seem to recall that the first styles were issued in 1987 as part of Sara Lee's initial efforts to expand the brand, but I could be mistaken and do not have the digital collection of catalogs to refer to.

Thank you.

Fall 1987 seems to be close to the intro date, but I don't have the books between Early Spring 1987 and Fall 1987 so it's possible they may have been brought out a few months before the Fall catalog was released. The first page of that book says "Our new Coach Lightweights Collection was introduced just a short time ago, and we are truly gratified by the enthusiastic response the collection has received..." So late Summer of 1987 seems like a good guesstimate.

The digital collection that some of us have only has the Holiday book from calendar year 1987. Both my Early Spring and Fall 1987 books are paper editions.

Is it the same shape as a Shoulder Sac, with an oval base? I can't figure out the shape of the base from the photos, and the Shoulder Sac's base is listed by Coach as 3 3/4 inches, not the 1 inch that's in your post. It would really help to see the actual shape of the base, and maybe double-check the measurement.

Oh! Thanks for catching that - I'll get a pic of the bottom and recheck the measurements.

Mine is about 4 inches across the center bottom. It appears to be only 1 inch deep at the top of the bag. I missed seeing that in your posted measurements.

I believe it was 1987. I have this catalog page from HolidayView attachment 3580434 1987 that mentions its recent introduction.

Thanks for the confirms. I too was going by the "New Lightweights" colors (hangtag) photo that I have on file labeled "1987-Holiday."

I'll add that I believe that the workers were confused as to which style bags got two rivets per buckle tab, which got one, and where to put them. I've a NYC-made 9730 Shoulder Sac in the shop that has only a single rivet per tab and they're quite offset from the centerline (as if there ought to have been a second rivet). This may contribute to the premature failure of the rivet over time.

Thanks!~ I thought I remembered that too. I couldn't find any examples in my files although I was sure I had seen those with one rivet. Mine had two rivets on each side but one of them broke anyway. It is an easy and cheap fix but it is hard to match the rivet exactly. My good one has a US creed and two rivets per side.

Yes!!!!!!! I doubled posted a few times, and was unsuccessful at editing another. The forum has been inaccessible off and on all day.

I also had major problems last night and this morning -- website wouldn't load; then a "we are upgrading the site, please try back shortly" message popped up, and lastly I had to keep signing in....it seems okay at the moment.

The first looks ok.

The second is too new for me, wait for someone who knows newer styles

I can't read the creed or serial number on the third one and am not going to take a chance trying to authenticate it. And I don't recommend buying it.

ETA - the3 seller says that the serial number is C069-9790. There are 3 different creed photos in my files from the 2006 "9" plant. All of them are different even though they were all dated within 4 months of each other (C, D and F for March, April and June) and the only one it seems even close to matching is the one with the D month code but there are still a few differences. Two are from India, one is from China.
Top pic is the questionable illegible one, the next 3 are the ones in my files. The "comps" are just about useless even if the creed in the original post was actually readable.
