Hi again,
I found two at a Goodwill outlet yesterday ( I can't believe what people give away)
The first is a Coach Metropolitan Briefcase US made M8T-5180:

thanks, yet again!

Please wait for other opinions on your bag. I'm not comfortable with some details but it's not my area of expertise.

But I'm wondering whether it's possible that Coach made a mistake and gave two different bags 5180 as the style number.

I don't believe the bag posted for authentication is authentic. The creed font is off and I don't believe plant code "T" was ever used for the US. Coach changed the turnlock to a square one and added the padding above the turnlock for later versions of this style. However, this one combines the old turnlock with the new padded area above the turnlock. I believe the shape of the leather pieces above and around the turnlock is wrong too. More opinions are welcome.

There is an issue with the toggle, I was going to try to fix it, but the oval ring (the female piece, dunno the correct word for this?) does look strange underneath. (also, plz disregard my gross nails, have been clean dirty suede)...

I won't repair or list this one, until I am notified otherwise.

Another question: I'm now aware you ladies really are THE Coach authority (no sarcasm, only mad respect!) I've been noting all factory letters with the corresponding country, and am assuming it doesn't deviate? Please PM me if you don't want to answer this question in forum. I swear I'm not going to sell this info to counterfeiters, I'm just trying to expand my own knowledge base, so I know what to buy and sell. I truly enjoy trying to spruce up & repair designer bags, for my own use, and for buyers who otherwise couldn't afford them.

Thanks again!

That's another indication it is fake. The back of square turnlock Coach used should have grooves or indentations where the parts are folded back but the oval turnlock backs should be completely smooth, not indented like yours. I'm sure we'd notice other problems with your bag if we could compare it side by side with an authentic one.

There were some factory codes that were used for more than one factory, even at the same time, like the M code. Others were only ever used for one as far as we know, like E for Italy and P for Costa Rica. As was discussed earlier in this thread, N was used for Mexico and later for China, and even though we don't believe it was ever used for the US, we have seen authentic bags with US "N" factory codes, which were probably the result of a stamping error.

Not only do you have to match the factory code with correct country but you also have to be aware of which years that code was used and the font and spacing of that unique factory. Added to that, some factories had more than one stamper with different fonts.

^and this is why I won't spend a lot of $ on bags from questionable sources ( IE: goodwill, unknown buyers) and why you guys (ladies) rock. I did have an authenticated briefcase a while back, it was lovely. I have another really sketchy briefcase/ messenger to check, but I'll google it before I bug you all.
Lastly,(for now) I've been using the info from Coach Rehab blog for refurbishing and style name info. It looks like she is affiliated with you (all). This is a credible source, yes?

thanks again.

some of the stuff she put on there in the beginning came from me, including a lot of photos. She isn't active here anymore and I kind of remember a discussion awhile back that she had some errors in her blog. We can provide you with style numbers, names, approximate age, etc. when you get items authenticated, or we have a separate thread for IDing here: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach/id-this-coach-item-post-any-coach-item-355205.html

For rehabbing, we have a thread that has several contributors and always has new information here: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-clubhouse/coach-rehab-and-rescue-club-833400.html

ETA: I forgot to mention in your authentication that by the time your bag was supposedly made, the square turnlock would have been used. I think they made the change because they realized a bigger, heavier bag was going to need a heavier duty turnlock.

I did suspect that the bag Morrigan asked about is fake (as confirmed with her further photo) but I was more curious about the differences in the closures in bags of the same style.

I agree with the others - don't waste your time. All their red flags are valid. Get your money back if you can.

The turnlocks were changed to the square style with a squared back in early 1996. There's no way a late 1998 brief would have an older turnlock.

The only VERIFIED T plant codes so far have all been for Costa Rica.and have been for early 1999.

Thank you, Whateve, Hyacinth & Beenburned. It almost looks like someone replaced the toggle (and did a sh!t job), but if the factory letter is also off, I will just toss this one. I purchased it at a goodwill outlet- I could ask for my $ back, but somebody else would just buy it, and possibly try to sell it. @ $1.69 a pound, I can take that hit.
I will update my resource printouts to those links, thanks again, Whateve.

You're welcome. We always consider that hardware can be replaced so if that was the only thing wrong, we wouldn't have said it was definitely fake. I wonder if it ended up at the outlet because someone in Goodwill recognized it as fake. Goodwill has a corporate policy supposedly to not sell fakes but the individuals running the stores haven't all gotten the message.

Could someone please authenticate this Coach Leatherware bag?
From GW last weekend…the rain finally let up enough to shoot photos :)
Approx. 10"w x 9"h x 4"d. Strap 14.75 to buckles.
I'm stumped for a name and style #. Guessing 80's-ish?
Any info is always appreciated…thanks in advance!
