^^ ditto, I've never taken my laptop to class once and I don't see many other students with theirs either. Only time I ever actually move my laptop around is when I'm going back home (out of town) or when I'm going to the library to study. I used to use Vera Bradley totes for classes but got sick of them because everyone at my school has them and the tote size is too big for me! I ended up picking the Reversible Sig Stripe Tote for classes because all I end up needing to carry is a notebook or two for notes, water bottle, makeup, phone, etc. I don't know anyone who has to carry their textbooks around but maybe that's just at my university!

I've found that needing books depends on the Prof. And, as a commuter student, I also bring books so I can study in between classes.

I do take my computer to EVERY class as I take all of my notes on my computer. I can type much faster than I can write. At my school, the majority of students do use computers for their note taking. I guess it depends on what the person prefers.

i actually type my notes on my PDA, i have the key board and microsoft office on it so its about 12x smaller than my laptop and gets the job done.

A guy who I've had several classes with does this. I thought about doing the same (I have a Treo & so does this guy), but I'm older and need a bigger screen! LOL

I guess it varies from university to university and also on your schedule. I'm a commuter student too but I always set up my classes so that they are back to back. I think at UF our classes are also largely note-based, with textbooks to supplement. What you're saying does make sense :)

I personally have a Kenneth Cole backpack made for laptops. Retail was right at $300 on it, but I got it for $30 on clearance at TJ Maxx so I was stoked. My DH uses it now for work usually tho since I am never mobile with my laptop anyway. I also have either a LV Aurelia GM multicolore black or a LV soft sided brown mono briefcase for mine and I wrap it in an insulated sleeve from Walmart to protect it (about $18?).
I've heard Coach lovers get the diaper bags and wrap their laptops in the diaper pad to protect and cushion it. Probably best way to go with Coach. Make sure if she uses her Carly for it (a large one would work I guess depending on laptop size?) that you get her a padded sleeve or something to cushion the laptop from damage. They break SO easy. (I usually go thru 2 laptops a year- and I dont even travel with mine anymore ever)
