Asscher or round brilliant?

I'd go for the round. It has far greater light return and is much sparklier, whereas step-cuts like the asscher has more of a glow to it.
Actually, well cut asschers have shown to have light return that would rival a well cut RB. Especially colored light.

And here is a good read on size comparisons when it comes to Asschers and RBs

The difference isn't that huge.

With all that said, they're both such different looks.
I consider both to be classics.
You have to choose what makes your heart stop.

I have an Asscher e-ring and I love it. I've seen some RBs that were stunning, but that shape didn't call out to me the way the step cuts did.

I would get the round for the left hand and the Asscher for the right!

Has anyone seen the Royal Asscher? It is suppose to have more sparkle!
I have a Royal Asscher, but again, the amount of sparkle will depend on the cut.

There is also a difference in the actual faceting of a generic asscher vs. a Royal. It was very easy for me to see the difference. Many people can't though.

This is a traditional asscher

this is a Royal

the Royal is deeper and has more facets.
Choosing between the two is really a matter of preference.
I've heard some people say that they think the RA is too "busy"

I would go with RBC if you opt for a solitaire setting. Asscher will look more stunning for 3 stone ring setting. But at the end it is a matter of personal choice.

Definitely go and try some rings on to see how these stones look on YOU - that's what's most important.

I've had the round brilliant and now have an Asscher, and imo it has just as much brilliance and sparkle as the RB, with the added touch of CLARITY, like sunlight on water. It's harder to conceal flaws with this cut!

Im from Australia, and I cant say I have ever personally seen an asscher on anyone, or a cushion cut!!! But, I think the asscher is beautiful. There is a perfume add where the bride is wearing a beautiful asscher er....it looks very `princess` !!!

you can't go wrong with either choice--both are beauties, imo.

just remember that sometimes a fancy cut tends to carry it's weight at the bottom. meaning a 2 carat asscher could look smaller than a 2 carat round.

make sure you look at the dimensions so that your 2 carat asscher looks like a 2 carat.

a 2 ct. asscher will look slightly smaller than a 2 ct. round if it's cut correctly.
Part of the beauty of asschers is that when you look into them it's almost like you're falling into a pool of mirrors.
It's a very deep cut and there is a lot of weight in the bottom. A lot of the weight in my ring disappears beneath the shank of my ring, but if not for the way it was cut, it would not sparkle the way it does.

This is a matter of opinion, but I think asschers can stand alone. It is a busy cut and side stones can be distracting.
Mine is a solitaire. I didn't want anything to take away from the beauty of the stone

I think it depends on how big of a stone you want to wear. 2 ct round brilliants face up much larger than 2 ct square cuts, including Asscher, b/c they are more "bottom heavy". If size doens't matter and you are not looking for brilliance and fire, go with Asscher. If you want something that will sparkle and have fire, I'd go with the round brilliant. Either way, your ring will be beautiful! Congrats on your engagement.

Im in the exact same debate. I feel like I want the "classic" round brilliant (my choice is from Tiffany's) for an engagement and then a whopper of an asscher for a big anniversary. I personally think the round brilliant matched with a beautiful wedding band is a killer combination. Get the asscher later!
