At least 90% of the time I think it is worth less. I've seen a lot of painted bags on ebay that don't sell. If it is a famous artist, it might do better. Also I think if the painting is not on a famous brand name bag, it would also do better.
 
I’m loving this thread! Now I want to find some bag needing rehab and get it rehabbed and painted!

Agree... I think anyone doing this would have to consider their finished work a special ”forever bag” on their collection or face a huge drop off in value when resold.

If you’re a Kardashian or Jane Birkin, you could probably auction off a customized bag for millions. But the rest of us can’t consider a custom bag to be an investment. Custom bags are very personal and specific to one’s own taste; it will be hard to find a buyer who will love it enough to pay a high price.
