I get your point completely. Just seems it was intentional so I was trying to make some kind of sense of it. That was the only reason I could think of lol

She had a lot of fears that came from her early years, things she never conquered like her fear of flying. Apparently you could not say the word death around her so I would guess she was afraid of it. People who fear death would avoid making arrangements like a will or a trust. It would be admitting that you are going to die and some people never do face that.

I read that she lived with/loved a man for the past 30 years, without marriage because she had already gone through a couple of divorces. Without a will, I doubt this man will get a share in her estate even though you would think he would be entitled to be considered family. I would never want to leave a mess when I die but I also am not afraid of saying/hearing the word death. It's a natural part of life to me and I would want my estate to take care of distributing my assets the way I want them to go. There's a heavy price to pay for carrying around a lot of fear.

My understanding of wills is that they are basically to direct assets to charities or beneficiaries not in the statutory line of succession and away from people who are if you don't want them to get anything, or to get less than others.

I read up a bit on Michigan and there is a set order or who gets what and how much depending on the relationship. It address spouses and step children among other things. I'm not sure of that can be contested in Probate. If she was OK with that order, she may have decided not to have one.

I think so too. My father passed away in Michigan and I was the executor of the estate since i am his only child. His attorney said he did that (did not make a will) because his brother felt he deserved all of my fathers' money and belongings. His relationship with his brother deteriorated in a very bad way over the years due to avarice & greed and I don't think my father had the stomach to hurt his feelings by creating a will leaving him with nothing.

A friend of my mum's will be playing at the funeral; she is a member of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra (a backup band/orchestra player, not a soloist). What an honor that must be.

As for the lack of a will, it is a shame. Unfortunately, the families of celebrities are no better than anyone else when it comes to their behaviour in the face of lots of money. Living trusts or at least wills go a long way toward distributing assets the way the deceased would prefer. It seems she preferred avoiding the topic more than making sure her assets ended up with the people she valued most - common for those afraid of death, but tragic for their families.

Aretha had a very eventful life and touched so many people. I hope she was happy when she died and went peacefully.

Umm, no. New Bethel Baptist Church has quite the reputation and history, some of it violent. Read up on it if you have the time and interest.
I've been listening on the radio to interviews about Aretha - people talking about her and also her father. Listening to what everyone says, he was very influential, active in civil rights, leader in the community......
not a peep about the unconventional goings-on in the church
