Are backpack purses back in style?

I don't think I could do it. I've done that trend before and I think I'll leave it in the past. I recently purchased LV's Mono Metis hobo and with its front pocket some say it has a backpack look without being a backpack. That's as close as I'll get. ;)

I love the all leather backpack and the LV Mono Metis. So many options out there! :)

I have had two different backpacks in my teens that are apart from schoolbags. I take them to go out with my family and friends. But I do not feel compelled to carry any more backpacks from since then, no matter the brand, unless I am travelling or hitchhiking.

They most certainly are making a comeback, hooray for that! :woohoo:
My Mulberry Tillie looks exactly like a backpack only it's got a shoulder strap (that's a wee bit too short for me :shucks:). Love the look. Love backpacks a lot as well, as I travel at least every other week and usually carry too much stuff. I decided that I'm going to dig out my Adax nubuck backpack for today's outing and see if it adapts to "just going out" as good as it does for work. :smile1:

I think Mansur Gavriel is doing their part in getting people interested in backpacks again. I actually love the look, but I'm not sure I would be someone that could pull that off. When I traveled for work overseas, I had a small Coach daypack that was ideal for all the walking/train hopping and such. Part of me wants to try it because its sporty chic style appeals to me (along with the idea of being hands free and I'm already addicted to messenger styles) but not sure if I could rock it.

I found one thing that surprised me with backpacks--I had to look close because of the brand, but I was pleasantly surprised--leather and no prints to be found anywhere. The bottom one resembles the MG one a bit.

I especially love the quilted one, they are both very nice.

I remember backpack purses were really in during the mid 90's to late 90's. I had a small mini fashion leather one in college and my parents bought me a mini black leather backpack in Italy. The one I had in college I gave away late in college and the black mini leather backpack from Italy looks brand new and in great shape.

It seems to me the best of this look is the backpack that can be carried over your shoulder by its straps rather than wearing on your back. To me this look is rather college girl.....

I wish I could like this trend. I've seen some gorgeous bags from various designers in beautiful leathers, colors, textures, etc, and then been dismayed to discover it was one of those "convertible" purse/backpack/shoulder "thingies." Argh! I tried them on, came close to thinking about getting one because I loved the leather/color so much (which came in NO OTHER STYLES - another pet peeve), then came back to earth and realized it would never see daylight (or night life). I talked with an SA in Neiman Marcus about the trend and she said that "it wasn't doing so well - grown women want a real bag." That said, I'm all for grown women who can rock it. I'm pretty adventurous with bags and all over the place with designers, but this is one style I lack confidence to rock. I'm 37 and a high school teacher. It just wouldn't work in the halls of my high school/workplace.

But on a practical note, backpacks are much better for your spine than one-side shoulder totes. You can be robbed if you wear it sitting down on a bench without a back (maybe) but I can't see any other way they're less safe than open-top totes like the kind so many women carry now (myself included). For comparison, I've had items stolen out of totes twice - both times in daylight - an iPhone and a wallet.

The career woman with laptop and files carries just as much as the schoolgirl (who no longer totes so many books in this e-book age). The young mom with a baby carries even more.

We have juvenile associations with backpacks but I would love if they made such a big comeback that those associations were lost. They could be as totally professional for adult women as messenger bags are for adult men (well, on the US West Coast... and Europe?)

Agreed, elisian. :) I was just thinking that the backpack is really the most practical because it evenly distributes weight across the shoulders. I should take note from my students, get over it, and rock it. But I just can't! So yeah, I'll continue to switch bags from shoulder to shoulder...or learn to just carry less!
