I understand, I would also like to clarify that I just re-activated my account (I didn't realise I had an existing membership until I tried to sign up!). I certainly haven't been active since 2008.

Would you have been more forgiving if I had re-registered and my joining date was today?

Frankly, I'm at the point where I prefer to authenticate for contributing members only. They participate here by posting and we participate additionally by helping in this thread.

Hi everyone,

Firstly I apologise in advance as I realise I am a new member - I've read the rules in the first page carefully and understand that you give preference to members who have posted extensively. I intend to contribute to purseforum now that I have signed up but I cannot help that I am new! I hope that somebody will be able to help authenticate a bag for me.

As per the rules, I searched and went through many threads and found that somebody had already asked for the same bag to be authenticated, however nobody responded to them so I am reposting this request here (the listing has ended however I have been given a second chance offer):

Item: HERMES KELLY 30 red Geranium TOGO LEATHER bag HANDBAG SILVER HARDWARE Retourne
Listing number: 271182362124
Seller: musology
Link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/27118236...ksid=p4340.l2557&orig_cvip=true#ht_500wt_1156
Comments if any: Have been given a second chance offer on this item.

Thank you in advance - I really appreciate it.

..

The negative tone in here and unwelcoming of new members really makes me stay away rather than making me wanna participate in threads. I have read through parts of this threads and feeling a bit uncomfortable. I do understand you "oldies" do a great job and trying to help but you could also be a bit more friendly otherwise no new members would like to be be contributors. Just my thoughts, maybe I'm wrong.

Actually it's just the opposite. We want people to be part of this community. We welcome that. To have people share their knowledge and perspective and post across the forum. That's what we mean when we say be a contributor - we don't actually want newbies (or those without a significant posting here and demonstrated brand knowledge) to offer authentication opinions. But when posters' only interest is free authentication, I think we are within our rights to allocate our time to those members who are actively involved.

I also want to point out that you got a very quick reply here yesterday - was there something insufficient about that? Because under the circumstances, I find your comment somewhat perplexing and rather illustrative of what I am about to say.

All of the volunteer authenticators here have received nasty PMs from posters who feel they are entitled to a response. As in, "You must do this for me!!!" We've also experienced that here in the thread. It's why over the years so many people have stopped volunteering to authenticate here.

We are happy to help people who are here for more than free authentication. I am not sure why we should be expected to do this for people who are not interested in contributing elsewhere. And I don't see it as unwelcoming at all, just prioritizing how we can spend our time.

It's a shame you don't feel welcome here, considering you got a pretty quick reply to your question. I suggest you consider using paid services in the future as they may be more to your liking.

One must "earn" the right to authenticate on tpf. Our authenticators have large collections of Hermes and have years and years of experience with the brand. It can be very confusing if less knowledgable people start giving their own opinion on authentication. And since it takes quite a while for our authenticators to look carefully at a bag, they have chosen to only do this for those who regularly participate in other sections on tpf. I own 2 Kelly's (one bought from an Hermes boutique; one from a respected reseller) and one Picotin. I've been a participating member for over 5 years but would still not be comfortable trying to authenticate a bag.

There are SO many threads on tpf! If one can't find one that interests them, or has no time to participate, then paid authentication is the best way to go. We're not unfriendly, just must be business-like on the authentication thread in order not to burn out our volunteers.

Mystified by this response. You received a very prompt answer to your request. This is a HUGE site. There are many threads about a myriad of subjects and Mistikat is just suggesting to you that you investigate them. When posters just want to ask authentication questions, it appears that they are not a contributing member of tPF. If you feel that non-responses to people asking about private sale bags, or sellers wanting free authentication of bags so they can make money from a sale is unfriendly, or posters who do not do us the courtesy of reading the instructions, then I am sorry. We volunteer our time and I think that says it all.

You are - please trust me, but you are. I'd love to tell you about "my story" here, but the thread is already off topic...

Stay, learn, particpate and enjoy. It takes time to understand, but it is very well worth it.

I received 2 formal warnings last week for posting wrongly in this thread. However, the lady who sent them was actually really nice when she realised I had just made a genuine mistake. She wasn't being awkward or selective- just doing her job. Another lady who must have read my response was even nicer & sent me a PM to say that I shouldn't be disheartened due to my lack of knowledge & that the bag in question turned out to be a fake. She was so genuine & wished me luck in my search to find another bag.

Glad you had your question answered, but as I think was mentioned in this thread earlier, your warnings had nothing to do with the authentication thread rules or your posts in them. Members aren't allowed to use or mention your Ebay/auction site/buying/selling rules anywhere on the forum - those were prominent in the pictures you posted twice, as I recall.

And ... it would be appreciated if we could get back to topic now. If anyone has any further comments, they can PM me or one of the other forum moderators to discuss them.

Thanks.

That's what I was trying to explain, that it wasn't out of spite that I received the warnings & that in actual fact you were really nice and understood that I was new and didn't understand the rules properly. Once I had posted properly, I had my query answered. My last post was meant to be a positive post. Sorry if it was misunderstood.
