Appropriate for a formal?

I think it also depends on the kind of business your husband company is.
I remember years ago when I was a lawyer, my firm (in NYC) had a formal at the Museum of Natural History to celebrate the firm's major anniversary. One thing that really stuck in my mind was the difference between the way the female lawyers and the dates of young male associates dressed. (Generally, the wives were sophisticated but more conservative.) I was a little surprised by how revealing some of the dates' clothes were. It was very easy to tell who didn't work at the firm. And this was years ago before clothes got a lot more revealing.
If I were in your shoe, I would want to look nice and still be true to myself, and yet be mindful of the fact that it is a corporate affair and that there will be professional women who might dress in certain ways.

I had to post this gorgeous Lanvin gown. It's more than you wanted to spend but it's sophisticated and sexy in an understated way...a dress that's appropriate for a stylish wife and not a PYT who doesn't know any better (as Tamarind pointed out). With the right jewelry and shoes, you'll look like a goddess! The draping is amazing on this dress.

my 7 year old niece is here, and saw the dress and said it was the same one the big green statue lady wears in the new york statue. once i realized she meant the statue of liberty i couldnt stop laughing and had to share it with you all.

I do however LOVE the dress and think it would be stunning on.

LOL @ Lady Liberty! I don't think formal necessarily means long but I do think the HL dresses are a tad too sexy for a formal work event. Here are a few too look at. ( I also love that long pink DKNY dress but we've established you don't like pink...lol)

if you have an HL near you, pop in and take a look at some of their gowns - i have one that i *love* and it's definitely appropriate for formal events!

picture from when i wore it to the SF Ballet Opening Night Gala - i like that it gives the HL shaping effect up top while maintaining sort of a nice dainty balance below with all the voluminous chiffon (^(oo)^)v
