Hiya ladies,

Im not usually on this side of the forum but I was hoping anyone could offer me their opinions on this particular ring that I am looking at.

Well, it's my birthday in a few days and my partner said I could choose my own present! (finally!! :D) I decided to go for a ring just because I dnt own many and I wanted jewelry bc it has more sentimental value.

I do have a small budget but I finally found a ring in De Beers. Now... Im quite clueless with facts & details about jewelery and my sister whos more knowledgeable in jewelery isn't around to give me some advice.

The ring I found has the following spec:

Platinum. 1.85mm (.07 inches) wide.
Color grade G+, clarity grade VS+.
Total carat weight 0.30

This sorta language baffles me! The price tag is £1200 and it's from De Beers, could anyone tell me if £1200 is over priced for this sort of spec on a ring?? I only picked it based on looks and our price-range but i'm not too sure about the specs?? Could anyone give me some opinions??

I'd really appreciate any advice, as I dont want to regret over paying just for the De Beers name!!!

:flowers:

i am far from an expert when it comes to jewelry, but one thing i do know with jewelry, when you buy a name brand (i.e. cartier, tiffany, de beers, etc.) you definitely pay more for the name, so to speak, than the jewelry itself.

i honestly think it's a bit overpriced for what you'd be getting (just under $2,000 USD). especially considering the cttw is only .30. seems really high for something that isn't even 1/2 cttw. even though the specs are good (clarity, etc.), and platinum is a little more expensive than white gold, it just seems a bit much for the cttw. overall.

but i'm sure someone who is a lot more knowledgeable when it comes to jewelry will give you a more expert point of view.

awww thanks for such a quick reply, I was hoping to get my present on saturday (but in a way im not in a rush either) so any advice helps :smile1:. I was worried that I would be paying more bc of it's name but bc my partner and I are a bit clueless when it comes to jewelery he wanted to be on the "safe" side and buy a name rather than from an independent jeweler. However... I would rather buy from a non branded jeweler but i'm rather relectutant bc I dn't really know what to look for or if I would be "conned"??

You're definitely paying for the name. Here are some examples of a similar ring for less:

0.49ct, F-G, VVS-VS, $795 USD:

0.37ct, F-G, SI1, $495:

0.25ct, $1425:

If you want to save money, I suggest going to a local jeweler as that ring style is fairly common and could be found anywhere. But, if you want the Harry Winston name and experience, then HW is the choice for you. Also, if you purchase from a local jeweler, you can take the ring to an independent appraiser to verify that the ring is what it's supposed to be.

I think Im going to check out the independent jewelers, thanks for all the advice ladies  Sooo... is it true that you could also knock the price lower if I were to pay in cash?? Or is that something terrible to do.. bc I've never done something like that before :blushing:

You can always try and haggle the price down -it will probably work better with an independent jeweler as opposed to a big house like DeBeers. I've never purchased from DeBeers, but my experience with Cartier, is that they discount 10%+ for certain purchases. Though, I highly doubt DeBeers will discount that ring no matter how you pay.

Btw, sorry for the mistake above mentioning Harry Winston instead of DeBeers.

Honestly, I would always buy a piece of branded jewelry. It appreciates in value more and you kind of hedge your bets. If the price of the materials goes down, the name retains its value. If the maker loses its reputation, the quality material itself retains value.

If you simply like the style and want a small memento from loved ones though, consider the generic, such as Blue Nile. Their jewels will be even less expensive than your local jeweler.

I hope that helps a little.

I also wanted to add that the house of DeBeers makes many of the things you see in the brick and mortar stores but their "name" isn't attached to it as DeBeers. They make so much of that jewelry. I know some stuff at the store I work at was made by DeBeers and we sell it as ours with no name brand on it.

Happy almost birthday!

I agree, don't pay extra for the name stamp inside :D

I just bought some various rings to stack
<----- see avatar

I didn't pay that much for my plain flat diamond band.

I was just about to post this. I own wedding band from Facets / Signed Pieces and it is amazing. It replaced the shoddy ones from Whiteflash (that's right multiple! Took Whiteflash MANY tries to get one that didn't crack apart, and they still couldn't do it!)

Wow, I'm surprised. I've always heard great things about Whiteflash...haven't bought from them though. I do like everything I have from Blue Nile, and have heard really good things about Facets. Everything Facets makes is ideal cut so you know it will sparkle like crazy!
