Well if gas company decided to remove the pipes then they had own reasons. I don't think that it will somehow affect your house. In my house in Denver we had the same issue. But after that case I changed heating and air systems in Denver, http://www.summitheatingco.com . In such way I cut down the heating bill in 2 times.

Their reason for removing the gas lines was because they had not been in use over a year. It's their policy for safety reasons. I have no problem with that. My only issue with the whole situation is that I was never told that they had been removed.
They replaced them without cost to me so I am satisfied.
