You can create an account and post updates about what you're doing, much like a blog, except the updates are limited to 140 characters. Kind of like an instant message.

The idea is to post "what am I doing now". You can add friends and see what they've posted and reply by doing:
@username The reply you want to post.

It's like blogging for people that don't like to spend all day reading. Much of the LJ community has moved over to twitter because it has virtually no issues with drama.

I like it because I can post updates to it via text messages.

Also, any drama it does have can be dealt with quickly by unfollowing or blocking. I've seen severe disagreements on twitter, but they're usually well thought-out, especially for a 140 character limit.
