I know! It was quite a price jump from the 3.3's I was looking at. I'm not sure if it was just that it was over that critical 4ct mark that gave it such a premium or the fact that it was also an F or what but yeah, craziness. My SA kept trying to sell me on it so that they could ship it in. I think she just wanted to see it herself.

AirMezPrincess,

I have an EC engagement ring and I love it! My original is a 1.34 VS1-G and I still own it and I think I am going to have it reset into a micro pave halo setting. My upgrade is EC 3.01 VS2-G. Here are two photos. They are
not that great of photos because they are shot with a DSL and had to be so cropped down to post here. I think you should go with an Emerald Cut---- they are so classic and you will never get tired of looking at it!!!!! Good Luck!

So in regards to the dream ring upgrade...go with what you can afford now???! and upgrade again later or save up more and go for the ultimate dream?! What would you do?

Would you consider something that is a little bit less than the 4ct EC? I recall the SA saying that they have a 3.63ct, E VVS2 for about 180k? I'm not sure about the dimensions of the diamond, but perhaps you can have them do a search for something just slightly below a 4ct so you can lower the cost a bit. BTW, I did that with mine because we were looking at a 2.73ct on paper and when I went into the salon, I ended up choosing a 2.5ct because it face up larger than the 2.73.

Also don't forget to negotiate. My DF said he negotiated a pretty good price with the SA. :p Oh, and he had the tax taken off (it's almost 10%) because he had it delivered to a friend's house in a state that does not have a HW salon. Hope that helps!

Hah I think she should've just brought it in anyway!!! haha!! When I went to NYC to pick out my stone, I got to try on this 8ct MONSTER. It was bigger than my knuckle joint. I didn't dare see the price. HAHA!

Geez..and here I didn't think I liked EC. I think wanting the bling of a round brilliant in my younger years has turned into an appreciation of the elegance and class of an emerald cut in recent months. Your ring is Spectacular!

What REALLY good advice!!!!

this is what i was referencing a bit: its about cut and measurements. you can have a 5.25 that faces up smaller than a 4.75. another piece of advice never ever buy a stone that is EXACTLY 2,3 , 4 or 5 carats. the cutter probably kept weight on the bottom to get to that crucial carat mark. diamonds are priced by carat weight, color, and clarity almost regardless of how they LOOK

Oh my god, I'm freaking out after learning that more than one of you feel that diamond prices are skyrocketing! I'll probably want to kill myself too if this is indeed happening in the next few months, because my boyfriend and I have been procrastinating this for a few years now. We had the means to purchase, but didn't...urgh...now I'm afraid that we'll get priced out.

What should I do? Contact a broker immediately? Or scout online vendors like Pricescope, Brian Gavin, White Flash, Good Old Gold...etc. I know nothing about diamonds though. I wonder if contacting a broker will be more beneficial. However, how much of a premium should I expect by enlisting someone to look for a loose stone for me?

I am also considering YELLOW diamonds, but why are yellow diamonds not expected to go up as much as white? I'm not going to lie, I look at diamond as an investment also, so I want to take into consideration their future value also.

Can anyone send me links to journal articles that discuss this price increase forecast? THANKS!

Ame's been posting them all year. Maybe search her posts. There was a jump last October, then December, again in January then March(I think). It was near 8-10% or more each time. Like she said (in this post or another) there was just another jump this past week.

Definitely in larger ones and in the "points" like one ct and one and a half and two. The even carat points like that. A lot of people focus on that magic number.

I would start right away. I'm a fan of goodoldgold.com and am a repeat buyer. They know their stuff and they test stones on so many gadgets beyond just their eyes and while Brian Gavin cuts nice stones in not his biggest fan. I have nothing positive to say about his former company whiteflash either. But it's still a start. Know what you can afford and dive in. Pricescope is not a vendor it's a site where you can learn about cut. But they are very rahrah bgd and wf and I was one that got suckered by the raves. Theres no negatives bec they're the advertisers on ps. So just bec you can't find one doesn't mean there aren't any! Don't fall prey!

Anyway... Cut is king. But rounds are rely the only cut that has true standards for what is ideal.

I am pretty sure the OP already owns an HW, and wants to trade her current one towards a new one. I think many of us do agree going outside of the brand is a good idea, though I will NEVER recommend Whiteflash to anyone on this planet. Even someone I dearly hate.

Thank you for the suggestion Kellylink! However I have never felt comfortable purchasing diamonds online. This kind of item I definitely need to see in person. I know I can save $$ else where like independent jewelers, or even Tiffany, but i'm definitely set on HW. We only live once...But I'm a pretty frugal shopper on everything else accept for Hermes, watches and now diamonds. These things I splurge and go for the best when I can! But don't get me wrong, I know many of you have gone the non Brand route to not pay premium and still get a good cut, clarity, and color. That makes perfect financial sense. My philosophy is we only live once and get whatever you love...and I LOVE HW!
