Hello, I'm sort of in a dilemma and need your advice. It is a huge investment so I need to really think about the best options. So for our 5th year anniversary, we were hoping to get my dream 3cts round brilliant, side tapered baquettes from HW. So that's actually about $100k (OUCH), but the last time I was in the salon, I glanced over and saw this incredible 4cts emerald cut with side tapered baquettes. Once I tried it on and it was heart pounding. Just, I mean, sweating, heart palpitations, the whole thing, didn't want to take it off!! This most beautiful ring I've ever seen. It's perfection. So I thought, gosh maybe this could be a dream come true for our 10th or 15th year anniversary lets say. This ring costs about $340k to be honest. It's ALOT of money! But I've been thinking, should I do an upgrade for the 5th year anniversary now to the round cut and trade it in later for that emerald cut for our 10th or 15th yr anni (HW buy back their diamonds at full cost but need to spend double the amount), OR save up a little more (actually ALOT more) and just do the emerald cut and go for the kill, as we all know prices of diamonds are going up so quickly and the longer you wait, the more expensive it will be. This is a huge purchase and I want to be sure its the right decision. What do you think?

I didn't know diamond prices were going up. Is it significant? Where can i find info on that!? If it were me, i'd just save up for the emerald and skip the middle ring. I'm not sure how long it will take you but i'd go straight for the dream ring.

To be honest, I don't think a 4ct ring is worth 340k. And the insurance on that is going to be at least $4,000/year. Assuming you wear it everyday, thats $11/day just to insure it!
That being said, if your heart is set on it and you think that you'll end up getting the 4 carat ring no matter what and its just a matter of time, then I say go for it. I would still get the 3ct in the meantime since you get the full value back on trade in. Once you have the 3ct you might just realize that its enough. Good luck deciding and please do a reveal when you make up your mind.

If the round brilliant does not make you go crazy like the emerald cut, I would also save up for the dream ring.

Doesn't HW have the most beautiful emerald cuts? I just got my e-ring there but mine is 2.5ct. emerald cut. The 4ct., I bet, is super gorgeous and I can understand your reaction when you tried it on.

BTW, when I was at HW a few weeks ago, the SA told me that their prices are going up soon and the increase (percentage wise) is double digits so you may want to take that into consideration.

Yes I too think 340K for a 4ct is a ridiculous amount, but anything HW is worth spending! Am I crazy! HAHA! And yes, please don't talk about the insurance! :sweatdrop: ohhh gosh! What am I thinking?! But my heart went pitter patter. Can't describe the feeling when I had the ring on, I think I stopped breathing for a min. But that round but did it for me too and I initially love it soo soo much. But the 3ct is prob more wearable for everyday?!?

lilmountaingirl, ohhhhh yes, diamond prices are definitely going up from what I hear, espc in the next 5 years. They say get your stones now. The demands have been very strong in the Chinese and India market, which is really driving the diamond prices up. Their purchasing power has gotten stronger, and espc they are grabbing HW as the quality of their diamonds are truly the best, so their prices are continuing to increase. But not just with HW, but overall in the diamond market. The yellow diamonds will not be as strong and it is more accessible, but it won't hold as much value. So don't overspend on yellow diamonds. For the larger the stones, it is more rare and more expensive, and it will become even more rare and expensive as times goes on so it is the best investment.

Your ring sounds beautiful! You should post some action pics! would love to see it! Emerald cut is so understated and elegant. But that Round is sooo beautiful too! Both are just beautiful, in its own way. I am not ashamed to say that I want both, but I have to be realistic and be concerned with $$. But Yes, price increase is another factor!!!! :thinkin::wacko: So just get whatever I can now huh?! The pressure of price increase! Whats

She has gorgeous shots of her amazing ring in her reveal thread :girlsigh:

Yes, emerald cuts are so understated but that's why I like them. My e-ring is the emerald cut in the micropave setting. I guess I got the best from both worlds. I don't mean to pull attention away from your thread but here is my e-ring from HW. I posted on my thread previously. ;)

I have an EC over 5 carats. Iy was purchased from a private diamond vendor. It cost no where near that --its hard to advise because quite frankly their prices are so inflated. Before anyone makes comments on quality my stone was in a ring at Harry Winston on memo there.........the stones are all in one big pool-owned byvarious cutters and other dealers. I wanted specific specs: color, clarity and cut parameters. My stone is classified as 1A for fancy cut grade. Further MANY stones particularly EC's are deep so they face up smaller than they should. I refused several stones in that same batch that were too deep (didnt want to pay for carat weight on the bottom). HW is some of the very best quality BUT you can buy the same quality other places for 1/2 the price. Additionally I wanted my mounting made by some specific.
