They may be machine stitched but I'd like to think they are still made with care by one person. And even if they aren't it doesn't devalue the bag to me. It is still just as beautiful as an entirely handmade Birkin or Kelly. I love my Evelyne :love:

I was told in Chicago Hermes several years ago that Kelly, Birkin, Bolide and Constance were totally handmade and all others were machine made (can't speak to some of the newer bags as this was over 4 yrs ago and they had yet to be introduced). I know I've seen that Kelly handle is totally handmade.

I couldn't agree more, littleblackbag. I don't want to be whacked by my Birkin but I love my Evelyne more. Shhh.....

I guess all bags are considered 'hand-made' since a human has to hold onto the leather to sew the pieces together. I don't buy the fact that the premium prices they charge are due to the products being hand-made. It just means that it will take longer and thus the quantity available are less so it makes it more precious. What I like about H bags mostly are their leather quality. Most of them are natural grain and that is expensive by itself. Then add the H brand and that by itself accounts for 80% of the premium price that they are charging. If the same bag using the same materials and quality of workmanship is made but it is a generic brand, do you think they can charge that much ?

:goodpost: littleblackbag and chkpfbeliever.

On top of machine stitched, some H bags are known to be both hand-made and machine-stitched. It's inevitable to have everything hand-made because some areas will be better processed by a machine depending on the design and construction. It's for the overall benefit of the bag.

Perforations of Evelyne eg. I believe is still done by hand. Until now, LV which are known to be machine stitched still had to rely on doing the perforations one by one for its Perfo Line. Being machine stitched doesn't devalue the bags imho because there is still the process of choosing the leathers and H leathers can last for many years and a life-time. Then, there's still the final inspection if the bag is acceptable to be put on sale and eventually, after-sales service.

Where can we get a messenger bag made in full clemence or barenia leather in other brands and can still be send for a spa eventually? Even if they do, it's covered with embellishments and the lining is another issue too.

Lol, I love transcendent1 witty post:laugh::

^^Craftsmen and thighs :graucho:

If you want a bag touched by a young craftsman's thighs, you get a Garden Tote.

If you want a bag touched by an older, possibly toupee-wearing craftsman's thighs, you get a Birkin.

I learned so much in this thread! :laugh:

was lucky to have had a long chat with a lovely craftsman, was told some bags are part-machine (stitched) and part hand vs the totally handmade/hand stitched ones.

hence each bag still has the craftsman stamp be it machine-assisted or totally handmade.

I was told that the Birkins and Kellys have both hand stitching and hand guided into a sewing machine stitching. You can see it in the bag too. Look at the front under the lock. The stitching goes " /////" with a slant to the RIGHT, that is a sewing machine. Now look at the handles attachments or the tag, the stitching goes "\\\\\ " slanted to the LEFT, that is the hand-stitche (where the artisan holds two needs and thread to make a saddle stitch).

//// = Right slant = sewing machine
\\\\ = Left slant = hand held needles

(Something similar happens in knitting too from machine to hand like a mirror.)
