Hello there,

I have done some googeling. And it is obvious that Hèrmes makes their Kelly's and Birkin's by hand. I've seen each picture, watched each short movie and red al the stories.

Does Hèrmes make each model by hand? Or just a few?

Thanks!

Hello dear lovely members,

I sent an email to Hermès, asking if any other bags besides the Birkin and Kelly were hand stitched. I wanted to know about Picotin, Evelyne, and Lindy in particular. This was the reply that I received:

Bonjour,

Thank you for visiting Hermes.com.

Please note that all of our handbags are hand stitched. For more information please contact your nearest boutique and a sales specialist will be happy to assist you. To find a boutique near you log onto www.hermes.com and click on Stores.

Again, we appreciate your interest in Hermès and we look forward for your next visit with us.

(I tried posting this on the "All Habdmade?" thread, but was unable to because the thread was so old! Also, reading through the thread, I couldn't find a definitive answer so I wanted to try to find out for myself.)

I hope this information is helpful!

I talked with a craftsman in an exhibition.

The craftsman informed me that (except for precious skins, whereas the ENTIRE bag will be hand-stitched), for bikin or kelly, only the parts that are subject to heavy tension are hand-stitched. I was also specifically told that handles of birkin are NOT hand-stitched, whereas the handle of kelly is hand-stitched.

I did not ask about other bags. But put it this way.....I would not expect that some less expensive models are entirely hand-stitched...so to save cost and time, Hermes can use machine to assist craftsman to do the stitchings...

For handle of birkin (except some precious skin)

My understanding is that at least stitching inside the lining is machine sewed such as the pockets etc. Therefore they cannot say the entire bag is hand stitched. But it's still "hand-made" as apposed to "machine-made" if you want to play with words.

That makes sense. Do you think at least parts of the other bags are stitched by hand? Like the Evelyne?

Thank you for sharing this! I did not know that about the Birkin handles!

Wouldn't machine stitching be stronger than by hand? I don't sew so I'm really curious. (And you don't want me near a sewing machine. hehehe)

Handstitching is stronger because of the type of stitching they do (saddle stitch). Basically, each stitch is sort of locked in place so if one stitch breaks the other stitches remain intact. With machine stitching, if one stitch breaks, the whole line of stitching can unravel.

There is no doubt that large portions of the bags are machine-stitched these days. Hermes tends to be very careful with the way they word things- ie, the bag is hand-made (true even if it's mostly machine stitched), the bag is hand-stitched (true, it does have hand-stitching on certain parts- notice they don't claim it's entirely hand-stitched).

Before coming on TPF, I was under the impression that the bags were entirely hand-stitched. But in reading thru many threads here, doing my own research, talking to craftsmen, etc I now realize this isn't true. At first I was a little upset but I've gotten over it lol. I love the designs too much to get hung up on this.

ABlovesH, thanks for your explanation! I was under the impression before reading this thread that H bags were hand-made but didn't realize the implication of the hand-stitched part. I'm learning so much. :smile1:
