Sous Le Charme d’Orphée
Orpheus is a man, but not an ordinary man. He is the son of a king. He is a magician and shaman. He can cross from the land of the living, to the world of the dead, and return once more. He is the first musician, the first poet, the first artist. He is a priest of both Dionysos, god of Nature, the wild, frenzy, madness and wine, and also the god Apollo, god of the Sun, of reason, of music and measured control. Orpheus holds the qualities of both gods within himself, for that is how true Art is made, held in exquisite balance.
This design is woven through with symbolism, the pictorial language of the stories of Ancient Greece.
There are 4 trees in the design:
Top left - Apple tree, the symbol of Aphrodite, love
Bottom right - Pomegranate tree, symbol of Persephone, goddess of the Underworld and the season, death and life in cycle.
Bottom left - The laurel, symbol of Apollo, reason and measure, rationality and music. Associated with the Sun and light.
Top right - Aleppo Pine, tree of the god Dionysos, god of wine, frenzy, Nature and madness.
As an artist, Orpheus held reason and madness, wildness and control in balance to create Art. Love and death are key components of his story with Eurydice, travelling into the Underworld to retrieve his lost love.
The pomegranate tree is flanked by Persephone, goddess of the Underworld, and Hermes, the messenger god, psychopomp to souls travelling to the land of the dead.
Centaurs and Apollo were associated with wisdom and prophecy. Apollo’s oracle was at Delphi. I have represented Apollo hurtling forwards, based on the famous Roman sculpture is the discus thrower, but holding the Sun in his hand.
Dionysos dances wreathed in vines of grapes beneath Aphrodite’s apple tree, love is often described as a wild passionate madness. Athene, goddess of wisdom listens to the music beneath her olive tree, her gift to Athens, her little owl perched in its branches. Pan, god of nature, wild mountains and lust is lulled to sleep by Orpheus’ music, beneath a weeping willow tree. Pegasus, ridden by the hero Bellerophon, takes to the air, the well of inspiration struck on Mount Helicon by his hoof. All Art needs inspiration to take flight.
On the outer circle of the design all the figures and animals are dancing in one direction, and on the inner circle the animals are facing the opposite direction and sleeping. Awake and asleep we create, and following our path in the light until we reach the dark, day and light, night and death. All the animals in the design crop up in stories of Ancient Greece, and are often symbols for the gods, the peacock for Hera, the bull for Zeus, the tiger for Dionysos, the monstrous python for Apollo..... At Orpheus’ feet lies the Sphinx, the riddle of life itself. The air is thrumming with insects, birds and butterflies, the sea is filled with fish. Orpheus worked his magic in music both on land and at sea, protecting the famous Argonauts from the song of the sirens with his music. At the centre is the olive tree, the national tree of Greece stars shining between its branches.
