I think the same way that we have been told to respect new posters and their right to like Kate, there also needs to be respect for those who don't.

For many it pre-dates her connection with Alexander. Some just don't like the way she acts (as in, onscreen), or how obvious it is that she often calls the paparazzi on herself.

For me, meh...sometimes I like what she wears (increasingly less these days) but no I don't have a great deal of respect for her, not as an actress, amongst other things.

Differing viewpoints keep the forum interesting, but tolerance goes both ways.

Edit: another tweet

MELANCHOLIA + TREE OF LIFE = High points of Cannes 64: The world is not enough; two talented auteurs turn the cosmos into the canvas.

Looks like something happened at the press conference with Lars von Trier? He sounds like he was typical nutty director to me.

This is a live blog for Melancholia in Cannes

Melancholia (Cannes 2011)

By Mayer Nissim, Senior Entertainment ReporterRecommend0Tweet8Send to friend More optionsKirsten DunstCharlotte Gain…Lars Von TrierMovies"No more happy endings," director Lars Von Trier cheekily promised in the run up to Melancholia. Given that the ex-Dogme 95 man's films have previously closed with hanging, mass murder and genital self-mutilation, it's quite a statement. Here's he's assembled what must be his starriest cast to date. Kirsten Dunst and Antichrist's Charlotte Gainsbourg are ably supported by the likes of Kiefer Sutherland, Stelland and Alexander Skarsgård, Charlotte Rampling and John Hurt. The set-up is your bog-standard shlocky Deep Impact/Armageddon sci-fi - a newly-discovered planet is hurtling towards the Earth. Being a Von Trier film, the execution is of course anything but.

After a pre-credits sequence letting us know nice and early that there will be no last-minute heroics from Bruce Willis or Morgan Freeman, we get an emotional rollercoaster in two parts. The first focuses on the wedding of depressive Justine (Dunst) at her sister Claire's (Gainsbourg) country house. All around her people are coaxing, bribing, urging, pleading for her to just be happy. But she can't. Von Trier no doubt draws on his own struggles with the illness to give the viewer an exhausting window on depression. The second part flips the sisters' outlooks, as Melancholia (subtle-as-a-planetary collision, that name) edges ever closer.

It's visually stunning from beginning to end, with the opening and closing moments in particular being (quite literally) breathtaking. As a raw exploration of depression, the first part a offers a sense of understanding that Jodie Foster's The Beaver apparently couldn't get near, while the audience is also helped along by flashes of wonderfully dry humour. In a much starker part two, Gainsbourg, Dunst, Sutherland and Von Trier combine so well that as the inevitable occurs, you feel - if not as blown away as they are - not all that far off.

gave it 5 starts

thanks for the reviews ladies. Interesting link Free - that von Trier sounds like a real card at these things. And also interesting that it ranges from "meh" to stunned silence as a reaction. As the North American outlets get online shortly, there will probably be more reviews. I laughed at the reviewer calling him the "Danish genius/fraud". The hand tattoo? yep, I'm guessing that was an interesting press conference..

Doesn't sound like anyone but Kirsten, Charlotte and Kiefer gets loads of screen time.

Just a reminder that EVERYONE is welcome in this thread. EVERYONE.
This is not a Kate Bosworth hate thread - if people that like her want to post they're welcome to as well. Tolerance peeps. :peace:

No it's not a Kate Bosworth hate thread. Not all of us "hate" her. Some of us are indifferent to her, while a few actually like her.

We welcome all new posters and varying opinions with open arms but when someone repeatedly calls you "haters", it becomes clear that their motives aren't to join the conversation but to ruffle a few feathers.

I realize we're your least favorite thread on this site but it would be nice if you'd take our side when someone makes it blatantly clear that they're trying to stir the pot and cause unnecessary drama.

lliloveit quote:
You can say someone is not a good actress without resorting to calling them "zimbio" or "grey" and whatever other denigrating names the "regulars" of this thread are calling this woman.
And yes, as the spokesperson of such a thread and of such "regulars", I'm not surprised at all that you have no problem with being named a hater

I don't think anyone hates her as we don't know her (besides hate us strong word to use against someone even if you do know them) but I think most just find her annoying and fake and some just don't care

I think in most of the reviews Alex won't be mentioned much in them going by what I've read so far

I think I hate her. I hate her acting, her style, and the fact that she misleads young adults into thinking her style and her sicknesses are what make you a fashonista. I also hate her "charitable " efforts which are just buisness ploys. I hate her claims of intellegence citing getting into princeton as proof (believe me I went to Ivy League schools. it has nothing to do with intellegence) I think having her as a representative for anything is an isult to the american public.

On the other hand, I really like Alex, and have lost respect for him due to his personal relationships,( for which I think actors need to be cautious of)
and his relationship with the media (which used to be good)
But he is easy on the eyes!!!!

how do you go from movies to hitler?? what questions do the reporters ask

Another one

Skarsgard brings a sensitivity and even vulnerability to his role that I haven't seen in his work on "True Blood,

http://m.hitfix.com/blogs/motion-ca...iercing-in-von-triers-apocalyptic-melancholia

This is a well written review. I love it. The guy is honest about what he saw. And it makes me understand the movie better. Definitely on my DVD list.
Those quotes I liked best.

"But with "Melancholia," there's no ambivalence, and I don't need to wrestle with my reaction. I loved it, pure and simple, and I cannot wait to watch it again."

And he's right about Kirsten Dunst. This movie will be a mark in her career.

"Eventually, though, a sort of seeping malice begins to assert itself, and Kirsten Dunst does the best work of her career in this film, riding the tricky tonal shifts as if were the easiest thing in the world. She makes it all feel natural, credible. She is an adult now, all traces of the child we first saw in "Interview With The Vampire" long-gone, and she throws herself into the role with abandon. It is a dazzling performance."

Alex does what he is best at, showing his vulnerability while acting. I'm surprised every time he does that considering his height and stature.

First of all, Squirrel was so nice to explain to you how it works here.

This is part of the problem. There's not a "way it works here". Members don't get to tell others how our thread's should be working. It's a gossip thread - aside from our house rules, there are none. Anyone can post whatever they like provided it's respectful and on topic. That is how it works here.

I think people should just remember there is an ignore button or to just ignore certain types of people.

yes!
