Completely agtee and many of the acts today I put in the same category. I am not of fan of Miley (too old), but I recently saw a video of her sitting on a piano singing Silent Night and was in awe. She really has such vocal talent and she should showcase that instead of her onstage antics. I don't see anywhere near that level of talent from Taylor Swift. She really needs the auto tune or whatever they call it.

I saw this too (it was on A Very Murray Christmas), and I have to admit, I was surprised Miley can actually sing. I'm so used to her antics I figured she just relied on that.

Now... I will say that I've heard Katy Perry & Taylor Swift both live, and it's not good. (KP is exceptionally horrific live - I honestly believe she is tone deaf. Taylor has an "ok" voice.) But I think they are more 'performers' about putting on a show. Madonna doesn't really have an exceptional voice either, but she's about the show & the performance, and she does that very well. It's just such a different style from what Adele is doing that you can't really compare. It's like comparing Britney Spears with Celine Dion. Apples & oranges.

How exactly does that work? Like how does the microphone know when you're flat, off-key, etc?

That's a good question, but most singers use them. Shania Twain wouldn't sing in public when she first debuted… for years! Then she got a hold of one and finally went on stage. (She's Canadian and I knew people who worked with her when she's on stage.)

So, it's not just Taylor. Few can sing. I think that's why so many of us love Adele.

Barbra, Whitney, Celine, Mariah, Adele.
Those ladies can sing.
The rest can carry a tune and Perform.
The former are GREAT. The rest are just a lot of fun.

Good list and I would add Bette Midler and the late Karen Carpenter. I remember hearing a male musician saying that she had one of the purest voices ever. I wish I could remember who it was.

I think Taylor Swift and Adele are kind of apples and oranges. Taylor is a performed and song writer. She's not known for her voice (which is horrific), but she writes some pretty dang catchy tunes, plays instruments, and overall is an excellent performer. Adele is a true and beautiful singer who doesn't do what Taylor does, and she shouldn't. Adele reminds me of the first time I was truly impressed with Christina when she sung Hurt at the 06 VMAs. Just a singer and the stage.

Taylor Swift can't hold a candle to Adele as far as singing talent. But where they are similar is in age and level of success. Two different types totally and I much prefer Adele but you have to give Taylor credit for being a smart business woman.

Taylor DOES write catchy songs that appeal to the younger crowd.
She's much better at writing them than singing them IMO.
