Thanks for posting this thread. I has an evil bay purchase arrive that was listed as "near mint" and had several areas of very loose, almost flattened gathers on the front and the back. I was so upset--seller does not accept returns and isn't responding to emails.

I got this thread opened and worked on the bag for a while, and it doesn't look near mint yet, but it looks way better than "used with damage" which is what arrived.

I am experimenting with placing a flat end of a 12 pound barbell (hand weight) on different areas of the gathers after I arrange them. There is about a 1" x 1.5" square area where the edge of the barbell sits flat on the sophia. That makes it easy to position the weight on different parts of the front and back. I don't know if the gathers will hold, but it seems a lot easier and less risky than ironing. My sophia is midnight so I am not worried about getting it dirty or color transfer. If I was, I would put a white cloth in between the weight and the purse. I just leave the weights on for 12 hours or more.

The gathers do seem to lay better when the sophia is flat, one side laying into the other side.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions in this thread and others. I would have never thought of these ideas myself.
