The "foily" effect makes it easier to maintain since the distressed metallic will disguise scratches, whereas the smoother metallic will show scratches and wear more visibly. Lambskin metallic is worse, IMO! Pretty hard to maintain. But it will depend on how you use it. Sorry I'm not being much of a help... I have a purple metallic 226 and had the grey metallic lambskin, and I'd have to say the metallic purple (distressed calfskin) is better in terms of wear-ability and peace of mind.
So my vote goes to the red w/ goldhardware!
Bottomline... metallics aren't advisable as an everyday bag.
