I mean, if you use the dupe, and you’re comfortable carrying it, then keep it!I carried my Jigsaw (British high street) 'BV-style' brown woven leather, E-W tote today. It was a hand-me-across from my sister about 20 years ago. 20 years ago!!!!
It was pouring and I didn't want to ruin a good bag. Before I took it out I was thinking this would the last time carrying it. It doesn't make the best shopper because it's shallow (I know that's more fashionable) but I managed to get my supplements and some groceries in unzipped (just about).
Now, I'm not so sure, totally in two minds. I have 5 BVs including exotics (one's a tote) and a dark blue Roma (also a tote).
Is it stupid to keep dupes when you have the real thing?

I’m not, though I’ve certainly owned dupes I didn’t realize were, because I’m not up enough on fashion. (Though I think the neoprene version of the Birkin is hysterical and I was tempted to buy it.)
I was actually in Bijou Brigitte yesterday (cheeeeep jewelry, think Claire’s in the US) and apparently they’re carrying bags now. I assume they’re all dupes of something, as I recognized about half of them. I was wistful that the “BV” hobo in terrible “leather” was really a lovely bottle green. Not that I can afford BV new. I just want them to come out with it now so I can buy it in five years!
Back to your dupe, a) are people going to think, “fake!”, b) do you care?
I wanted a BV for a long time and finally bought one on ebay in 2018. It's an older intrecciato in a gorgeous blue in nearly perfect condition. Surprisingly, it didn't make my heart flutter like I thought it would. It's a pretty bag and I still am happy owning it, but I have no real desire to buy another one. It would probably have been a good idea to buy a dupe first to see how much I liked the style. Conversely, I'm amazed at how much I love BV cervo. Before I got it, I had no interest in cervo; only wanted intrecciato. Sometimes you don't know until you test drive something. I think dupes allow you to do that without much investment.'Dupes' are just high street products that filter down from designer brands. This one obviously from the early 00s. Fakes are meant to fool the eye into thinking they're the real thing.
In Italy, there's a long tradition of weaving and knotting leather goods, BV is just the most globally famous for 'intrecciato'.
Thanks for the compliment on the bag. It really is beautiful and unique. This is a beautiful bag. It sounds like it may not be 100 percent love but take into account the thought he put in it. I made the mistake years ago of returning a gift I didn't love. Now he is afraid to surprise me, and I always have to pick my gift.
I’ve often wishes there were good dupes for some of Hermes’ bags. I don’t understand why I don’t want a B or K since they’re highly coveted and well loved. I feel like I’m missing something. So I’ve often wanted to take one for a week or two test drive.'Dupes' are just high street products that filter down from designer brands. This one obviously from the early 00s. I have no desire for a B or K. They aren't my style. The H bags I find interesting look softer, like Bolide, Lindy, Evelyne, Picotin.I’ve often wishes there were good dupes for some of Hermes’ bags. But, then, I’d actually have to test drive the real thing because I think a lot of the fierce H love comes from the quality of the leathers and a dupe wouldn’t provide that experience.
I’m glad you’ve kept the Lanvin-it’s beautiful! Thanks for the compliment on the bag. It really is beautiful and unique.
Happily, I never have to worry Mr. S will have an issue with me returning a gift. We both want each other to have what makes us happy. So if I return it and get something else he’d be just as pleased. Plus he’s bought me so much I love that he feels he knows me better than myself - which in some cases is true because I’ll cheap out and compromise whereas he won’t.
That all being said, I’ve decided to keep it. 🤩 I realized I was manufacturing a concern because I still feel bad from making some poor, rash bag choices last year. Once I recognized that, I could stop trying to find a reason to reject it and allow myself to love it.
Re: the Chanels I purchased. I do love one of them but feel like I can get a Chanel any time. I think this year I want any additions to fall within one of two categories: 1) gorgeous workhorses that can fit my more causal / rarely in office lifestyle with practicality and beauty and 2) unique bags that quench my thirst for variety and interest in my collection.
My Raylowi navy crocodile bag looks like a Birkin, which is why I don’t picture it here-it’s my most used bag and most complimented.I’ve often wishes there were good dupes for some of Hermes’ bags. I think I’ve just been so off put by Hermes’ business model that I haven’t spent meaningful time evaluating them. That and I’m not much into the equestrian aspects of styling. My Raylowi navy crocodile bag looks like a Birkin, which is why I don’t picture it here-it’s my most used bag and most complimented.
When I first bought it I didn’t use it much as it was difficult to open and close, now I use it most days, in all weathers..
I don’t baby it, but I didn’t pay a croc Birkin price…
I’m worried about upsetting the real Birkin owners(I’ve owned a H Tsako bag which I gifted), it Does look like a Birkin!I think I’ve just been so off put by Hermes’ business model that I haven’t spent meaningful time evaluating them. That and I’m not much into the equestrian aspects of styling.
But, never say never.I reserve the right to change my opinion
@cecchetti - why not show off your navy crocodile bag. I’d love to see it!
I think it is very pretty. I almost bought a brown croco dupe years ago in Zurich before I even knew about Hermes, ended up buying a different bag because my kids were younger and I didn’t want to deal with the opening. I wonder if it was the same brand. The leather was beautiful and the bag was well made.I’m worried about upsetting the real Birkin owners(I’ve owned a H Tsako bag which I gifted), it Does look like a Birkin!

Here it is -I hope I don’t offend anyone….
Yesterday my husband asked me what I wanted for Valentine’s Day. He kind of caught me off guard . So I told him a bag my son’s girlfriend has . We ordered The Horse Clementine bag in Oat. I don’t own any leather bags in such a light color. I almost switched it to a darker color but both Dh and my son’s girlfriend said I should get Oat. It will work well with my spring and summer wardrobe. Has anyone had a The Horse Bag?
