Thanks so much @ValleyO! This was very helpful.Lauren Sherman, the fashion reporter for Puck, wrote about the upcoming Murakami collection yesterday:
Murakami Time
Dior is a trickier challenge than Louis Vuitton, which has benefited from the warm reception bestowed upon creative director Pharrell Williams when he joined to design menswear in early 2023. Nearly two years later, however, things have cooled, and Vuitton, too, needs a boost. And artistry alone won’t cut it. While the creative directors at the house—Williams, Nicolas Ghesquière on womenswear, and Francesca Amfitheatrof on jewelry—all drive significant sales, even the billions of dollars Ghesquière is pulling in pales in comparison to the revenue derived from LV’s humble coated canvas wallets and handbags. Perhaps that’s why the company is planning on relaunching its collaboration with the artist Takashi Murakami in the coming months.
I guess everything old is new again (or everything old that was once sellable is still, hopefully, sellable). The Murakami collab was famously first introduced in 2003, back when Marc Jacobs was the creative director of the entire maison. The collection—for which the artist Murakami-fied the brand’s signature monogram with rainbow colors and cherries, among other treatments—was available until 2015, about two years after Jacobs exited the business. It was hugely successful, generating more than $300 million in its first year alone, and still commands high prices on the secondary market.
Supporting players were whispering that Ghesquière was not thrilled about the comeback. After all, he and his team have designed most of the brand’s top-selling handbags, and reviving Murakami could be considered a lazy stunt on the part of Louis Vuitton C.E.O., Pietro Beccari. In the end, after talking to people close to Ghesquière, it seems that he is happy to see it revived in a new context. After all, Ghesquière has succeeded at Vuitton over the past decade because he has managed to handle the extreme commercial pressures while continuing to design collections that often feel daring and artistic. He knows how to play the game, and certainly understands that Beccari is under pressure to jumpstart sales before demand for luxury goods picks back up toward the end of 2025, when China (hopefully) gets back on track and interest rates continue to drop, as many analysts predict. (The company didn’t respond to a request for comment.)

I need them to launch a Speedy B20 or a Nano Speedy with removable strap in Black MC so bad!!! 🥹
Building hype to justify the exorbitant pricesI wonder when they are going to announce it when the release should be soon? 😅 I mean it‘s a big deal. Why keep it secret for so long?
Personally I‘m very excited because I‘m not a quiet Luxury kind of person. I was born in the 90s and streetwear and bright colors appeal to me. I can‘t think of anything more boring to me than a beige bag. I‘m happy that they are doing the collection as I heard, with their current selection of styles and not just a relaunch.I wonder how successful this collection will be. It was huge and did well in the 2000s bc bright colours and over the top cuteness was a thing. It was everywhere, that was what fashion was at that point. Especially with the Japanese kawaii trend influence in pop culture. But now, fashion atm is more refined, classic and timeless kinda vibe. Which also explains the general flop of kusama, I think. I was just thinking to myself, would I carry a multicolour speedy rn and the answer is no. Apart from people who have loved the brand and the past collections, I'm not sure how the new gen will take to it. Will be interesting to see!
Hopefully they don't give the bags away for free to "influencers" again bc that really cheapened the kusama collection and made me think "if they're so willing to give it away for free to basically everyone, then why should I spend $4-5k on the bag?". It would make sense if the faces of the house were carrying the collections bc obviously that's a no brainer but every tom dick and Harry influencer had an unboxing of THE SAME BAG and it was so cringe.
However, I personally do hope this brings Takashi a lot of success!
I can't wait to see what the collections look like and see if there's anything I'd like to add to my collection! I want cherries and rainbow flowers!

The main quality issue for me would be the screen printing and how it fades with proper use. Seen so many multicolour pieces faded over time - so sad to see it like thatPersonally I‘m very excited because I‘m not a quiet Luxury kind of person. The kusama collection however was not my style at all with the dots and primary colors.I also find her to be quite controversial as a person.
I‘m very hopeful with this collection. However I hope the quality will be there, that would be the only dealbreaker for me if they cheapen out on the lining and hardware. We will see. 🥰
Me too! I remember scrolling the site back in the day and looking at all the options. I agree, something small would be super cute and wearable. Toiletry 26, nice nano, all the wallets! Think of all the textile possibilities!Interesting thoughts! I was way too young to spend money on LV back in 2003so I'm excited to see this release. However I'm not really into the kawaii stuff either. The cherry and blossoms are cute for me to look at but wouldn't buy it for my own collection. I'm aiming for a white multicolor piece, preferably a nano speedy or pochette accessoires or other small bag. And agree on the influencer part, I don't think LV should do that, gives it a cheap taste.
My multicolor bags are all fine and still vibrant. But I store my bags in a closet where the sunlight doesn’t come in. Maybe that helps? I‘m excited to see the collection and if they are doing the microfiber lining again. I love the red interior on my whilte MC bags! 🥰The main quality issue for me would be the screen printing and how it fades with proper use.
