I think this is a great idea!
I'll start thinking now...

I can say that as far as lifestyle changes this year - and I've had way too many this year - I have begun to value comfort.

After 2 injuries this year and not being able to wear a lot of my pants and now most of my shoes - I need to be wearing things that don't hurt me anywhere. I'm not sliding into Slob-hood, but I have begun wearing things that are easy for me to get into - like dresses and pants that are loose. My shoe situation though makes me want to cry. I like dresses and have found a brand that seems to work well for my height - so that's good. And I 'like' flat shoes - but currently I can only wear something with a low vamp - so all of my beloved loafers and boots are on the sidelines for the near future. :crybaby:

The two moves in two months (GA in November and the local move in 10 days) has truly made me realize that I have WAY TOO MUCH stuff. My goal next year is to not buy anything unless there is a true need, or find a Holy Grail scarf. I might not succeed 100% but I am really going to try.
Having spent 3 months on crutches and/or leg braces this year, I truly commiserate with you. I really hope this season of difficulty for you ends more quickly than expected with even better results than hoped for. Sending you hugs!
thank you for this food for thought. I bought 2 bags this year: MKII, black Epsom PHW and sac Kelly elan, etoupe Epsom, ghw.

Sac Kelly elan is the best bag purchase

The purchase that makes me feel the most special when wearing is my Dior cocktail dress

It hasn’t. I go out less and travel more, but my style remains the same which I think of as vintage with a twist. When I travel, I don’t carry bulky bags or RTW that cannot be rolled.

I’ve made a few RTW mistakes.* I love everything I’ve gotten, but some things will never come close to cost per wear

Next year, DH and I want to go out more so we can have fun dressing up (shopping our closets) and less time shopping (we have enough)

I hope your pipes ? were fixed ; I hope your beautiful things were not damaged

Agree, but in my case, I’d also rather spend on RTW like a great coat or dress

I bought one vintage necklace from Briony Raymond that I don’t wear that much: I’m going to rectify that next year

I love this bag, and I love your style. I was strongly considering buying/ twinning with you on your leopard Borsalino, but ultimately decided that I do better with cooler leopard tones (but not the white/gray snow leopard, IDKW) near my face. Also, a lesson I’ve learned is that I have a large head relative to my size, so plainer hats are better on me lol

@Bag peace , thinking about you and your mom

@dcooney4 , @Cookiefiend (I know what it’s like not to be able to wear a lot of shoes and hope this is temporary) ; @Sparkletastic ; @papertiger , all, hoping for good health for you and our loved ones, which is better than the best material purchase

ETA* Re mistakes, I made a rookie mistake. I bought a couple of pieces of RTW when I was barely into a size smaller (meaning I should have gone up a size so I could do things like breathe and eat lol). So this is a reminder to myself
Thank you!
How about 2 of my new 2024 bags on one night?!?

It was a Balmain party, basically a disco around a pool. So many beautiful ladies, I think you would have loved it because they were dressed so feminine and sparkly. I had a wonderful time.

The dress is Alexander McQueen Denim from SS04, a 20 yo dress with the bags, but I think it looked good. I'm wearing it with a Balmain silk scarf.

You are the epitome of effortless style.

I think I’ve shared all of my new babies here but I may have skipped one or two. This is my last one that just arrived today. :amuse:

Prada (Vitello Daino ?) Large Logo Bowler Bag in a deep chocolate w/shw. IMG_2047.jpeg
I love Prada’s saffiano bags but think their older leather bags are something special. So given I’m tiptoeing into adding earth tones to my wardrobe this is a fun and relatively inexpensive add. It’s special to me because a red Prada bag that I saw one of my mother’s friends wear was the bag that started my love of designer bags. And my own first premier designer bag was a pink Prada. I actually thought I’d be one and done for designer bags. :roflmfao: If I’d only known!!!

This is a perfect example of me buying a happy beautiful “comfort” bag that I’ll love wearing with zero regard to what anyone else is doing trend or style wise this year.

Maybe, instead of styling challenges, a year in review challenges?

probably Coach soft Legacy drawstring from 2013. I don't carry it a lot but if I could only have one purse, it would probably be this one. The pebbled leather seems indestructible. It holds up in rain. The bag is big enough for everything and is easy to use. The navy color goes with everything. It's one of the bags I pick for travel.

Hammitt. Of the 6 purses I bought this year, this one makes me the happiest. It reinforces my belief that it doesn't have to be designer to make my heart sing. I think this shape is adorable.

How have lifestyle changes affected my style this year?

As I get older, I'm more interested in comfort. I've made a conscious decision the last few years to buy less. I haven't bought a lot of clothes this year as I realize I have so much from previous years that are perfectly fine. In winter especially I just want to be warm and cozy.

After years of doctors telling DH to exercise, he has finally decided to do it. He goes for a walk everyday and I go with him. So comfortable shoes are important.

What is the one thing we’ve learned this year that we want to take into the next?

Labels aren't important. You can find quality where you wouldn't think to look.

Hello all, playing catch up again haha.
@papertiger glad you're on the mend and hope you're fully recovered by now for the holidays!
Question for all of you: I hate putting my bags under the seat because that space is filthy from shoes, old food, people throwing up, diapers, etc. I’ve started bringing 2 small trash bags with me and placing my handbag inside a plastic bag for protection right before I slip it under my seat but I don’t like the waste.

What do you do to protect your bags from dirty floors and overhead bins?
Bag goes inside a tote. The tote takes all the abuse. 😅

Actually, I'm not sure I'm sure what's out of fashion. What do you think is out of fashion where you live?
I don't go out very much so I'm not exactly sure. California in general is so relaxed and casual, I feel like no one really puts together an outfit anymore.
I feel that the low rise skinny jeans are definitely out. Despite the Y2K resurgence, those jeans have stayed in the 2000s lol. Which I'm fine with. I wore them and they were fine but they were such a pain to put on and take off.
I do feel like high heels have been out of fashion. Ever since the pandemic people don't seem to have gone back into wearing them. At most a kitten heel.
Though I'm like @Sparkletastic heels for life! haha
I also feel like high waisted or maybe super high waisted pants are going out of fashion? Or maybe they're trying to make it go out of fashion? I still like high waisted though.

I’m feeling grumpy and have grown to despise selling bags. I have eight that need to go but I’ve had nary a nibble on the first three I’ve listed which are the best of the sad little bunch.

Fashionphile gave me abysmally low quotes on the three. I’d keep these bags but I know I’ll never wear any of the eight. (And my stylish DD hides in the bushes when I try to give them to her  )

In any case, I have zero energy around listing the remaining 5.

What do each of you do when / if you reach selling fatigue but have bags of value that just need to go.
I too have come to dislike selling anything anymore. Not that it was that fun to sell things from the beginning of course but it definitely feels more like a chore now. Sometimes I have to do one here and there for a clean out. But I really try my best to prevent that by making better purchases.
I don't really have much of a plan when it comes to reselling now. I just hold onto things until I can't stand them and wait until I have enough stuff and just send them off to TRR.

Maybe, instead of styling challenges, a year in review challenges?

What is the one thing we’ve learned this year that we want to take into the next?
Most useful purse?
- Probably between the prada re-edition in saffiano and Celine mini (or is it small?) boston bag.
- Both bags are hardy, durable, have a zip and are secure.

Best purchase of the year?
-
My gucci jackie in ancora!!! Been loving it this year! I feel it's the perfect size, holds the max of what I would carry but never feeling bulky, heavy, or in the way.

We’ve all had a lot of lifestyle changes this year - how has it affected your style?
- Trying to get into wearing more casual outfits, instead of my usual business casual. Partially because of various occasions I have attended are more casual and partially because my husband cannot stand my love for business casual.

What is the one thing we’ve learned this year that we want to take into the next?
- This more work related. Learn how to delegate tasks to others. I can't handle everything and need to let things go and give them to others but continue to hold people accountable and responsible. It's hard, sigh, haha.

I always love the questions some of you ask! They really make me think. So here are my answers to the ones posed by @Vintage Leather recently.

Most useful purse?

Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM. Very close second are the Neverfull GM (a little too big for everyday use) and the Goyard St. Louis PM (the handles are a bit shorter than those on the Neverfull, which makes this bag a challenge with jackets and bulky sweaters). I have two in the MM size, one Monogram Canvas and one Damier Ebene. They go with everything, wipe down well (baby wipes without alcohol) and can hold everything I need for work - and then some.

Best purchase of the year?

Hermes Birkin 25 in Gris Pale Togo GHW with the Twillys my SA recommended and the Rodeo she let me add on top of the Pegase I purchased from her a few days before the bag. I had hoped to add a second Birkin this year and I am very pleased to have this one. I had wanted a 30 and PHW, but she didn’t have any that matched the leather colors I was seeking. When she mentioned this option and showed me an online photo, it was love at first sight and I’m actually finding the smaller size great!

We’ve all had a lot of lifestyle changes this year - how has it affected your style?

I took a new position mid-year in the same organization in which I was working. Total game changer! I have actually started wanting to dress up more (heels and all!) and have been looking forward to going to work again. The position I previously had was fine, but I was underutilized and no amount of trying to explain that to my boss sunk in. The person I was working for in the new position moved up to a higher position and her replacement is an old friend; worked out even better than I could have imagined.

What is the one thing we’ve learned this year that we want to take into the next?

Life is too short. Stop chasing things like promotion if they require you to sell your soul. Stop and smell the flowers; lots of must-do things can wait, so take time for the enjoyable things.

I agree with all the comments that dressing / putting together outfits has just really gone away for the most part and it’s made me sad. No matter where I go in my two “home base” cities or in traveling for fun or a bit for work - people aren’t dressed up like they used to. I almost never see men in suits nor do I see women in fine clothing and heels. I also don’t see people in interesting “fashion” choices. It’s a lot of non descript casual wear.

I’ve also noticed much lighter traffic here on tPF than pre Covid. And sales traffic for my listings on various websites is much slower than it would have been in the past - both for handbags and for home goods. Lastly, I’m able to snap up incredible deals for older / vintage items which suggests to me that people just aren’t buying like they used to. (I’m scared to buy newer items anywhere other than retail because of super fakes. So I wait for sales when offered since I love the zing of getting a deal.)

I think the evaporation of “fashion” outside of the industry or a few city centers is all based on a few factors - Gen X (my generation) and younger don’t value status signaling as much as older generations do. The pandemic shifted people’s spending to home, experiences and comfort wear. Workplace clothing is getting more casual by the day. Luxury fashion pricing has increased faster than other goods. Fancier events like galas, operas, etc aren’t as widespread or well attended post Covid / as generations shift. (I know I’m in some of the same organizations as my parents and we have fewer black tie events than they did.)

I’d love to hear different perspectives on this from all my pocket friends across countries and generations.

I think it has been going on a lot longer than you realize. When I was a child we always dressed up to go out to dinner or to the movies. Sometime in the 70s, my mom started wearing jeans, probably around the same time that girls were allowed to wear pants at school. In the 80s there were restaurants where men wouldn't be let in if they weren't wearing a tie, then there were those places where they cut off your tie if you wore one. When I went on my first cruise in the early 1980s, there was a dress code on the ship. I remember my grandfather wouldn't go anywhere without wearing a hat but my father never wore one. It was generational - people who were adults in the 30s and 40s continued to dress like they did back then. I remember riding the bus to work in the 80s and occasionally a senior lady would get on, well dressed including hat and gloves.

Slowly, dress codes started to disappear. I can't think of anywhere we went even in the 90s where we were turned away for not dressing up. When you go somewhere and other people are wearing flip flops and shorts, you feel silly if you dress up, so fewer people do it until almost no one is doing it. I remember it making me sad when it first started happening because there was no place to wear my fancy clothes but now I don't think about it at all. I'm happy not to have to dress up. Part of it is that when we go out these days, we are grabbing a meal; it isn't a special occasion as we do it several times a week.

When we dressed up in the 60s and 70s, it wasn't status signaling; it was just good manners. I think most people weren't label conscious. There weren't prominent logos on anything. My mom wore some designer labels but nothing was obvious.

I can't remember the year but it was before covid that Coach made skinny jeans the uniform for SAs.

Maybe people got tired of seeing designer labels everywhere that it stopped seeming exclusive.

I'm old so people don't notice me. I dress mostly for comfort and to please myself.

@papertiger also has a huge closet!
I love my clothes, and take great care of them, but do not have such a varied style as either of you!❤️

Yes, I’m aware of those changes throughout the decades. However, it took decades to see material change. We’re seeing a rapid decline in style and / or formality in 4 years since Covid. So much so that it’s hard to tell what is really “in style” for anyone not in the fashion industry and / or dressing for social media purposes.

I honestly don’t care what others wear as you can never know someone’s situation or point of view. And (when I’m not swaddled in some stupid medical contraption or recovering from medical intervention) I will happily be the most dressed up person in the room. If I’m going to a nice restaurant, I’m not wearing flip flops. If I go to a dance performance, I’m not wearing leggings. I like to dress so I do. I’m just surprised how disheveled everyone looks now. Casual is one thing. Disheveled and careless (uncombed hair, wearing house shoes and PJ bottoms in public, etc.) is a whole and completely different thing. IMO the latter speaks to a lack of self care if the person has the means to dress otherwise.

I agree-last week at the funeral I was virtually the only person in a suit, apart from my brother in law.

I thought suits were obligatory for a funeral..

Most useful purse-My Raylowi navy crocodile bag(which looks like a Birkin)-I don’t baby it, and use it for most occasions, recently changed over to my Jimmy Choo navy alligator to just have a change, but I prefer the Raylowi, and would buy a Birkin to replace it.

Best purchase-not a bag, but the Calleija South Sea triple row pearl bracelet which was an insurance claim which I had to pay towards as it was underinsured.
I wear it everyday and absolutely love it.

How has my lifestyle changed my style?

My partner of 30 years passed away last year, (he was 25 years older than me), but I see my younger girlfriend several times a week and go out a lot.
In fact, my clothing budget for next year is higher than this year’s one, so although my lifestyle is far more casual (we used to go out all of the time, plus regular holidays, and I lived in Paris for 9 years-may go back one day and stay permanently), my gf loves shopping and so do I, I don’t plan to stop clothes shopping anytime..

I hope you can be my Borsalino twin. You probably have coluoring close to neutral, you can probably make either work but my store didn't have the snow leopard or I would have bought that as well. They do custom too.

You have to try, as you pointed out, it can come down to nuance. My new Eleneanora is such a lovely colour, but I never would would have picked it for me from the shelf, the SA made me try it. I have most of the trad colours plus a few more unusual. I was thinking I may like a bright rose, shocking pink or even orange, I never would have thought 'lilac'. Some of my H scarves work with it so beautifully too. You have to try.

Most Useful purse?
It is not even in my purse list. I bought it as sport bag to use only in places where a bag could get dirty. It is the Quince Revive Nylon Camera bag. I have been using it nonstop since I hurt my wrist. It still looks brand new and is so easy to use. It is even better than the bag it was trying to be a dupe for by changing the width of the strap and other minor changes.
Best Purchase of the Year?
Cuyana Mini Easy Zipper Tote in Cherry- Finally found a small red leather bag that fits what I need and love the color. I wear it crossbody. The leather is lovely and for those that know me well know I have trouble wearing red, but this one I have actually worn.
Life changes and how has it affected your style?
Life has been really rough the last few years. I take enjoyment in what I can, I no longer care what other people think about my purse collection. I buy what I like and will wear. I paint what I feel like painting not going by what will sell. I make more of an effort to see people that bring joy to my life. With these changes my clothing style is casual with a bit more flair than before, because I care less about being judged.
One thing I have learned this year that I will take into next year?
Life is short! Make memories that will last. Have some fun!

I’m sorry life has been rough. You’re such a sweetheart that you only deserve the best. :hugs: I wish better times for everyone on this thread who has struggled in vrious ways.

And YAY! to not caring about “the world’s” opinions and to making great memories.
