2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

Too late :giggle: I should have an unboxing later this week. Due to my (up until now!) "frugal" nature (that description is from my own mother), and my excellent budgeting software (YNAB fan), I already had the cash. The handbag sinking fund didn't have enough, so I moved some from my 'future months' bucket to top off the purse fund. It's more so the idea of spending this kind of money on a handbag. It's kind of crazy. But I'm going to allow myself a little craziness, on occasion. I told my husband last night, "I'm going to buy a Gucci purse, don't be surprised". Though he also thinks those prices are crazy, he said he trusted me. That he's seen over the years of how I spend money and budget and knows that if I spend it, everything else is covered. And it is.

Definitely not something I want to do often, though! But I do want to do it at least once, so I can experience it too.
Looking forward to your unboxing soon.
Life is short, we should treat ourselves sometimes.

These are my yellow and orange bags. I have a canvas tote in orange but is stored till spring.

Love the tone of that yellow bag!!! I’ve been idly looking for the right yellow bag forever. Last year or the year before there was a Coach barrel bag in a nice yellow and I regret not getting it.

@cowgirlsboots I am sorry to hear about the accident!!! So glad everyone is ok.

I don’t have any orange / yellow bags to post for this week.

Haha, not much living vicariously in my case... my travelling is nothing compared to what you tend to see on Insta... very basic hotel, sandwiches in the room instead of going out for dinner...

We only were in Paris for 4 nights and we travelled together with DH´s older son and son´s girl-friend who had never been to Paris before, so it mainly was a group experience with little individual free time. Still Paris is wonderful!
We went to the Salon Retromobile, a bic classic car show, did a little sight seeing, general walking around and enjoying the city and a tiny bit of vintage shopping before the time was already up...
I didn´t get to see any luxury shops except for the Galeries Lafayette where I had a close look at Bulgari. (Honestly I was a little disappointed. I had thought the leather would be nicer.)

On the way home we got into a car accident. DH´s son´s car was wrecked. Fortunately nobody got hurt except for a little whiplash and DH´s son has amazing friends who came to pick us all up and take us home.
I hope the whiplash is okay and glad no one was seriously injured. Your trip sounds lovely and I agree about Bulgari leather
Hugs

I'm glad you weren't hurt! :hugs:

@afroken I'm putting this here instead of the Frrry thread because I don't want to derail that thread with my "play" piece.

You inspired me to make another popcorn pouch/ cube.

I saw an old skirt with a leather patch in a thrift store for $3. That price- low for even thrift store standards- is likely due to the odd combination of faded teal (laminated goat) leather patch against a tan microsuede skirt. I can't recall the last time I saw genuine leather combined with faux.

Anyway, I bought it and unpicked the leather patch to make a little popcorn pouch. This one is just for me because the leather is in a pretty distressed state and is full of holes from the original stitching on the skirt. I'll probably use it as a catch-all because I hate to see leather get wasted.

It really is one of my favourite designs. You've picked a great bag for your trip. I'm sure you'll love everything about it when you get Frrry's beauty.

Pics are of my sample quickly fashioned at 3am because I couldn't sleep.
This isn't a stitched pouch, just a mock up. The proportions are off (the bag isn't high enough when extended) because I was limited by the size of the patch. I unpicked the patch and roughly cut up the main body of the skirt. I used the goat leather for the outer and the tan microsuede for the lining. I wanted to see if I had enough usable material to make it a functional size.
Now that I know it can be done from those bits of the skirt, I'll take it all apart and do it again properly- clean up the edges, hand stitch the body, use a better quality zipper (this one is repurposed from the skirt but gets stuck).

Thanks for giving me a fun project. :flowers:

This is fantastic! I love that color! You're so talented!!!

I'm so sorry about the accident!

I felt the same way when I saw Bulgari leather. It's a shame because the designs look nice.
Thank you! Don´t worry, the accident was more of a nuissance than anything else.

Exactly! I really love the design of the pouch with the snake clasp. It looked so nice when I saw it on youtube, but the leather was a disappointment and the size was much smaller than I had expected, too. I didn´t even ask to try it on.

Basic hotel or 5 star, when you walk out the front door you are still in Paris!
Exactly! All I really care for when it comes to a hotel is that it is clean and friendly. We´ve been returning to the same Ibis Budget many times. It might not be lux and do not have the charm of an old building (the very first time we went we stayed in a very charming looking old hotel and had to share our bathroom with a roach population... never again!), but it´s great value and only a Metro ride away from the heart of the city.

Out of curiosity I looked it up last night and saw that one night in the Plaza Athene is about 12 times of one night in the Ibis Budget...

In America, we actually have a phrase for being disappointed by Paris - Paris syndrome. I will admit, my first trip, riding a bus from CdG and seeing the graffiti and the refuse on the street in the poorer neighborhoods - I wondered why anyone thought Paris was a good idea.

And then, I spent three days wandering around lost, speaking bad schoolgirl French, eating random pastries and buying my first scarf - and I never wanted to leave.

I hope everything is okay with the car!

Did people love your Jaguar bag?
Oh, I understand. There´s such a huge difference between the fairytale Paris we get to see on advertising, movies and social media and the reality. I absolutely love the city- warts and all! It´s magic in it´s own way even if you stay away from the lux side.

The car was a total economic loss. DH´s son sold it on for spares and the buyer picked it up in France. Problem solved!

I can´t say much about what people thought, but I ended up loving the Jaguar bag. After shortening the chain strap to short shoulder and attaching a wide black nylon strap (looking like a seat belt) for crossbody it turned into a very practical yet special bag I really enjoyed to carry.
The leather is absolutely not delicate- no single mark or scratch in sight and I was fairly carefree with it. It holds all need and not even the silly soft white leather interior suffered.
I was very happy I had taken the effort to redo the magnetic closure. The second attempt works perfectly.

I did not get many comments on it, but they were all positive. The lady at the coat check at the car show for example asked about it -which designer?- and liked it a lot. There were many premier designer bags, mainly Chanel- at the car show. I noticed that people looked at my bag wondering the same. Can´t be that bad... haha!

Wow! Great! This is a project according to my taste! Please show us the finished pouch!

I hope there are no lasting effects from the accident. I am glad you Got to go to paris .
Don´t worry! I think we all got lucky. I felt a bit strange for the first two days afterwards and had problems driving because I saw movements that weren´t real, but now I´m fine. DH, his son and DS had no problems at all. DH´s son´s girl-friend, who had been sleeping in the front seat, suffered some bruising from the seat belt and back pain for a few days.
