2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

August 20 - Burberry, Celine

Random related question, since you know so much about all this stuff! Do you have any suggestions on stain removers for fabric? I have a dress with a difficult one. Tried Tide stick and some gentle rubbing, but no go, so I took it to the dry cleaner (the dress is dry clean only anyway). The stains are a bit faded, but still there, and they put two, small holes in my dress, which they did not disclose when I picked up the garment!? One stain is in the front, which is also where the two holes are, so I would really like to get rid of it. I had the dress cleaned the last time I wore it, which was about 3.5 years ago, so I have no idea what it could be. Any suggestions would be most welcome, as I love this dress and want to save it!
I realize this post wasn't directed at me but I have had this issue myself plenty of times and thought I would share what I've learned in case it's helpful in the future:

- Per dry cleaner, better not to mess with stain if going to bring to them as they will have better chance of treating properly.

- My best friend swears by using dish soap especially if a greased based stain. My cousin and another friend also used a small bar of white soap (not sure if it was regular or a special kind) that seemed to work wonders.

- As for commercial stain sprays, I had my daughter test these for her science project (thought "which stain remover works well on red wine" was quite practical lol) and while they all were similar (shout, spray & wash, etc) we thought the oxyclean spray was best.

- Last but not least, a small amount of hydrogen peroxide depending on the color and fabric could help BUT be very careful but this could also bleach out the fabric if it's not white (or sometimes even discolor if true white). This is especially effective on blood stains.

Oh and important tip from a friend who was a laundry fanatic..... do not put in the dryer as the heat will set in the stain. Anything I think may have stains that weren't removed I usually let air dry so can attempt working on them again.

Hope you're able to salvage your dress!

When you know, you know…this desk spoke to me even though it is in less than pristine condition and I had to mentally find a place for it. But a little elbow grease and $60 will be worth it!
Love this. Are you planning to do anything to try to restore the condition or keep vintage looking? Assuming you're keeping original color?

Thank you so much! This is quite helpful!!! Once I fix the small holes, I’m going to attempt some more stain removal.

I just want to clean it up a bit, touch up scratches and dents, not completely rehab. It does not need to look like new. I like the original color, so it is staying. Found a cute chair for it for $20. :-)

I started Christmas shopping. Which is both a good idea and an incredibly terrible one. I find all the best deals, but usually give too much, then just give spontaneous just cause gifts.

So while I did shop too much, I have half of VintageMama’s shopping done.

For people who actually go to an Hermes boutique more than once a year, does Hermes still make the Etui a Preservatif? I couldn’t find it on the website, but … I also can’t find calvis most days, so I don’t count on h.com for much.
The Knight is turning 18, and I’m not ready to be a grandma yet. I’m hoping a little orange box will help drive home the “no glove no love” lecture. (And not risk something degrading in a wallet)

Anywho…

It looks insane and it probably is, but some of the bags are bags I have been wanting to try but the price point for nylon was stopping me. The 11 bags all together cost me less than my two Oliveve bags. Mz Wallace rarely has sales and does not allow other stores to put their bags on sale more than 15 percent. So when they do 40 to 70 percent off you jump if you are a fan. Having seen a similar sale years ago, I knew just add to cart and pay right away as certain styles sold out in minutes. Anything I decide I don't want will go quickly later.

Oh that’s a very pretty chair. I like the desk you bought too. I buy vintage pieces too, I think they add character to a room.

I usually Christmas shop at the last minute. The few times I’ve started early I spent too much because I forgot what I had!

I loved the multicoloured one you bought, its a really fun bag, and as you say it makes sense to buy time to decide which ones to keep.

I am waiting till everything arrives before I decide what stays and what goes. Some will no longer be made and one is one of a kind sample. Though the sample backpack is staying.

Silly sewing challenge: DH brought in a ratty sofa throw, my first thought was: coat!

Here´s what I came up with. This is the first coat I made since the early 2000s. Lately I´ve only been altering pieces.

View attachment 5830823View attachment 5830824View attachment 5830825

It´s a bit tighter on "Olga" than on my actual body.
The fabric is very loosely woven and has more snags and small defects than I´m happy with, but for now it´s ok. I´ve been thinking, that in case too many more defects will happen I can always start embroidering on it.

The coat is amazing! I love that you have a tailor's dummy called Olga. I used to have one called Brenda.

I hope all goes well in Paris - you will be the la belle du bal!

I don't know if they still make it. It's not something I've looked for :D but great idea, absolutely fab.

The Calvis are under SLGs - but also under personalisation on h.com. Maybe initials...

Sorry for a leave of absence from here, I'm on Annual Leave atm so I have a bit more time.

Because I'm on AL I'm doing some wardrobe management. Buttons to sew back on etc. I've been looking through shoes in order to edit. So far only one par of clog-boots have made the cut. Found my ombre lizard Prada '00s heals which I am newly in-love with, and actually felt quite comfortable. Heels could be my new (old) thing again. I would like to find my beautiful Prada '00s jewel-encrusted velvet wedge sandals. I don't think any of these things a worth any money resale, so I may as well wear them.

I was invited to a wedding, I made a donation to a donkey sanctuary, but I decided not to go to the actual (second-time around) wedding. I am happy for the groom, but I'm still friends with his ex-partner, and I don't fancy being all over SM smiling and dancing, it would seem a bit weird. I talked it over with myself :D and I thought, I either go and have fun or stay home and be mindful. It's definitely more truthful to my real feeling to stay home. My only regret is - it was a an opportunity to wear some 'proper' clothes!

If it's still available, next week I am going to look at the BV clutch in person, so there maybe a bag coming in. Meanwhile I've been carrying my Intrecciato 'ball' Cervo Gunmetal hobo (I think @880 has one, perhaps @Vintage Leather too(?)) and Large Navy Roma non-stop (pleased to see in August's Vogue large bags are supposedly returning).
