2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

By tb do you mean Tory Burch? I like her dust bags because I can make them stand neatly. I hate satiny ones because the slip and slither and don’t stay put. It is funny how we all like different things.
Yes, by TB I mean Tory Burch. I’m not a fan of those dust bags. I like ones that are thicker but have some softness to them (if that makes sense). The Aspinal of London ones are really nice. And the Polene ones, at least before these recent changes.

Thicker is good. I don't own any Aspinal, but I am very curious about them. All the ones I have seen on here are lovely.

I don't care about the box. If the box is nice, I feel like I need to keep it but I don't have the space to keep them neatly, so I'd be happier without. I really have no use for the boxes. (related: I hate that California made everyone switch to reusable bags as now I have a zillion of them. They are too nice to use for trash like I did with the disposable ones. I have a ton because every time we use instacart we get more.)

I use dustbags but have trouble getting the bag back into the right dustbag so it isn't that important to me what the dustbag looks like as long as it is decent quality fabric.
I sometimes use the 'wrong' dustbag as well. I have a couple of my largest bags that I use pillowcases for.

Gorgeous new bag! And very interesting question. I’m less a fan of boxes as time goes on. They’re heavy, bulky and a pain to store since I don’t keep my items in them. And I say this as someone with 4,000 square feet of finished house space with only three occupants, so plenty of room. I take (and keep) Chanel and Hermes boxes, but that’s because resale (should I ever decide on that route) is better with them. The rest? I’ve started declining since I just get rid of them anyway. And I’m always annoyed that shipping an item doesn’t give me that option.

Dust bags are a different story. Anything and everything that comes with them with the exception of jewelry is stored this way when not using. I use the jewelry ones when traveling, so I love those, too. As a matter of fact, I just went on an ordering spree (Poshmark, Mercari and eBay) to get jewelry pouches for old items that didn’t come with them. And an unpopular Hermes opinion? SLGs with no dust bags. The horror!

ETA: Any chance you can show us the difference via photo? I’m super curious. I don’t own any Polene, so no reference point.
Thank you! :flowers: Yeah, dustbags are great! I'll try to get a comparison pic tomorrow.

Gorgeous color!
I don’t really care about the boxes. I appreciate nice packaging, but it’s not a deal breaker. Just don’t send it to me in a sloppy, careless way.
I do however care about dust bags since I use them. The worse in my opinion is TB - they feel really cheap & rough.
Disappointing to hear they have changed the packaging though.
Thank you! :flowers: For me, it's been department stores have been bad about sending bags in a sloppy and careless way.

Gucci never used to give out boxes for bags until end of 2015 unless it was an online purchase. Before then, people were rather buying bags from the website just to get the box. So it must mean a lot to lots of people.

Hermes gives a hat box with their hats, when I bought my tweed Funk hat - no box. There I am, ready to go home by train, carrying a £400+ hat one sheet of tissue paper (crown not even stuffed-out) squished in a too small paper bag.

Oh yes, it matters. May as well buy in Zara!
That's interesting about the history with Gucci!
Totally agree on the Zara. At that price I don't expect the 'extra's I do when buying designer.
That's crazy with your Funk Hat! :wtf:

Yes! Aspinal's boxes and dust bags are marvelous! So think and soft!

H hat sold with no hat box:

The SA said the store had run out of hat boxes. My answer to her was, "If that's true, it's not acceptable and is indicative of bad business practice. Since your store knows how many hats it bought from Paris, they should know how many hat boxes were needed. No Hermes store would dare to have more bags in-store without the same number of boxes." The reason why I still bought the hat is because I wanted the suit from RTW (same tweed).

I do agree it is unreasonable that such a high end store didn't have adequate packaging, but at least you got the hat you loved in spite of the annoyance.

In general my thoughts on the topic overall are that receiving something with nice packaging does add to the overall luxury experience, however, i really don't care much about packaging and dustbags, i really just care about the item itself. I don't store my bags in the dustbags but sometimes they're nice if packing handbags or nice shoes while traveling. That being said, i think the jimmy choo dustbags are one of the nicest feeling.

It's true, I love my hat. It wasn't the SA's fault either, but I also think she shouldn't say such stupid things, really there are no excuses. I believe someone was recently sold an Hermes 100(cm) cashmere and it was put into a 90 silk box (altogether smaller/flatter). If it matters, it matters.

So hot here today, I carried my Evie once it became a bit cooler at past 4pm. All I bought was 2 avocados, a loaf of bread (too hot to make my own) and some grapes. Apart from washing my hair and reading - that was my day. Exhausted now LOL :D

How much do you care about the quality of the box and dustbag?

Quality should reflect the brand. Of course, I don't want a box or bag that starts falling apart.

But as for the box and dustbag itself? Doesn't really matter. I used to really love to keep the boxes to store home items. Luxury boxes are very sturdy for the most part and can last for a while. My big YSL and Moynat boxes came in really handy for closet storage.
However, at this point, it's just too much stuff.
Especially the paper bags. I used to keep them because they were so pretty, but they're a bit difficult to reuse. I'm not fond of attracting unwanted attention to myself using a luxury paper bag that could increase the risk of being robbed. I do sometimes use it to give gifts, but that's only for chose family and friends who know me and know that I reuse bags so they won't expect something from Dior or Hermes lol.

As for the boxes. I've kept some because they are so pretty, but for the most part I don't ask for a box anymore. Takes up too much space.

For dust bags. Basically never use them. My bag dust bags are only good for putting the bags on top of them when they're on the shelf.
I almost never use my shoe dust bags because I don't really travel with designer heels. Medical missions don't need them lol. And when I travel, I tend to walk a lot so it's usually sneakers and more practical shoes.
At one point I had 2 bags full of shoe dust bags and they were kind of driving me crazy. I have now used them to organize my socks, underwear, and swimwear.
Never use any travel pouch for jewelry or watch. It's just not my thing. I put items on trays, in the jewelry box, or am just wearing them. :P

How much do you care about the quality of the box and dustbag?
As somebody who always buys preloved a nice box and a dustbag are always a very special treat.
Not many preloved items in my price range come with them.
So when I get lucky and receive them I am very happy.
I generally do use dustbags- the few original ones I received, homemade ones from scratch or random brand ones I find in cheap job lots preloved.
My few boxes do house the slgs they came with and I enjoy looking at the pretty boxes, stroking the lovely surfaces...

...patent leather

..it´s pretty, but problematic!
I have a few patent bags, mainly vintage and really like their look. But I hate that you can see each and every fingerprint and that some of them get sticky with time. I hate that they are hard work to keep in good condition.

The only patent bag I love with all my heart in spite of it being a little sticky and sporting some discolourations is the mustard Dior New Lock bag you all have seen a million times because it has become my grab and go the moment it arrived at my house. It´was cheap, it´s easy to use, amazingly durable and as it has its faults anyway I don´t have the slightest bit of fear of ruining it. Still it´s Dior, feels lux and the chain makes that signature sound of quality...

Will I buy more patent? Maybe! If something pretty falls into my hands for cheap it will be likely for me to buy it. I certainly will not buy any expensive or even brand new patent bags.

Where did the time go? June is about to end.

June stats

My hoard is still there, even though I did some more fairly drastic purges and tetris sessions resulting in a little more free space and the facts, that 1) I already forgot where I put some items and 2) some items I had totally forgotten about turned up out of nowhere and might actually get some use. I even unearthed a second jeans jacket (in a storage pile of old childrens clothes)- it´s 90ies in a child size 10 years, but fits me. DS encouraged me to get a silly back patch for it, so now I´m looking forward to the patch to arrive and to transforming the boring thing into something I will wear.

I did not buy any expensive bags this month, but a girl needs something to play with, I guess...

bags in 2: the brown Kuhn Fine Line bag from the beginning of the month and another, navy, smaller bag from the same brand I simply couldn´t resist getting, because it was so cheap.

The latter came from sellpy. I do not know whether this preloved site does sell globally, but just in case any of you is tempted to shop with them: buying a bag from sellpy is not recommended. My bag had been described as black and looked it in the not to good photos. It´s actually navy. The only fault that had been described was a dirty interior (which turned out to be fairly clean), but the scratched hardware had not been mentioned.
It was shipped in a big paper bag. No stuffing and arrived very out of shape. A structured bag shouldn´t travel this way... The wide shoulder strap had been folded flat. Bad idea! The fiberboard interfacing was damaged this way...
I decided to keep the bag and rescue it (to the extent of unpicking the whole strap and changing the interfacing...)
