2023 Resolution: Shopping my Own Bags and SLG Collection

A long standing tradition in this thread is to remind ourselves of how wonderful our own collections are by showcasing them. We can see how far we have come, collection wise, and we reminded that we have all (or most of) what we need making it easier to shop our own closets.

• New theme weeks start each Sunday

• Don’t jump ahead but, if you miss a week, please do show your bags “late”.

• Show bags individually or in a group

• You do NOT have to wear the bags that week

• For added fun, show old pictures from previous years to demonstrate how you have curated it over time.

• This is completely voluntary. There is no pressure to post at any time.

So what are the showcases? In the Fall, we group our bags by makers! Feel free to show bags, small leather goods, or however it is easiest to organize!

I just came across this thread and realize this post is a few months old so hopefully things are looking up for you. I just wanted to say that in my experience, when things like this happen, it tends to be a blessing in disguise. I think it means something better will come along for you. As the old saying goes, when one door closes.....

5 years ago i was fired from my job where i had worked for over 10 years, had been promoted several times, had been the #1 salesperson nationwide 3 times and in the top 10 every year. You can imagine what a shock this was, especially since i had just given up my dream of moving out of state and not only pulled the trigger on buying a house to settle here but dumped my entire savings into gutting and renovating the house. Essentially i took a step back for a year but then out of the blue i received a call from the owner of a similar company who said he had heard about me and wanted me to work for him. I have now been in my current role for a little over 4 years, love my job, and am making literally 3 times what i was at other job. Stay positive and hopefully something similar will happen for you!

Yay :ghi5: I am so happy for you.

I don't think my situation was as extreme, but I wasn't happy in my last job. It was the end of very long road that turned out to be a dead-end. Anyway, I applied for a new role and got it. I hate not working now.

Found photos of two more. I know I have a small burgundy eel clutch, but can´t find the photo.

The brown bag is Goldpfeil and very dear to me. It used to belong to my aunt. After she passed I found it at the very back of her wardrobe in a plastic bag hidden in a hamper. The interior had completely disintegrated, but she obviously couldn´t throw it out. I did a new fabric lining. (Not fit showing... this was my first attempt of this kind of sewing... but it made the bag usable again.)

The hidden corners were the places where I found her "true gems", pieces I instantly loved and felt attached to. This bag and some torn or half unpicked furs. I still prefer them to all the "nice" stuff in the front of the wardrobes.

I wasn’t sure if there was a better place to post this! The title does say “shopping my own collection”… if anything, I can resort to the June 4th theme of Textiles by saying I have a few textile bags in the photos below!!

I am trying to make the most of our closet, so I have embarked on giving my collection some TLC and working on displaying them. I am about 1/3 of the way through, but I’m liking the progress so far.

My problem is, if I don’t see my purses, I forget what I have. So storing in dust bags and boxes doesn’t work great for me. Plus, I love my collection, so seeing it makes me happy and reminds me of what I have, so I end up using my bags much more frequently than when they are hidden away.

So, without further ado, are photos of the 1/3 of my handbag collection reorganization project. Hopefully I will be able to share the “finished” project eventually. My current fear is that I may actually run out of room for my purses before I start encroaching on some of my husband’s space. But then again, maybe he won’t notice…

Feel free to ask any questions about what is in these photos. A mix of contemporary, luxury, and “small”/independent brands in there. I can’t say I have a lot of purses other people would have that are well known, I mostly just buy purses that appeal to me… which are a lot.

Edit: it pains me that my little coral side pouch bag looks orange and not coral in the photos above! Here’s an attempt for a better color correction… why is it so hard to take accurate color photos?? (Probably does not help it’s under indoor lighting… maybe the colors change when the file gets compressed too??)

love the floral Coach tote. I kind of wish I hadn't resisted getting it.

I don’t have any items that are fully exotic. My pieces:

Me too!

It's weird wanting something so much from a brand I don't know very well, it's not any more of a risk than buying a new bag from anywhere, it just feels like it is. I loved the Coach 'Saddle bags' too.

Sorry, dear bag lovers. I am very anti-PVC or plastic, I don't think I have any pleather/vegan/eco-leather (I sold lots of vintage vinyl 50s/60s bags about 10 years ago) BUT I definitely would buy/carry a mushroom or pineapple-leather.

The only thing I could think of for this week is I have a very vintage patent leather Gucci (1969) it was my mother's and it was going to go to the skip if I didn't rescue it. It sticks to everything and it should be a warning to stay away from patent or plastic anything. I still love it, but it's a wreck.

No vegan leather, pleather or plastic for me either. I'm not a fan of things trying to look like something they aren't. But I'm fine with leather textured to look like croc or snake so I guess that makes me a hypocrite.

Agreed. Not a fan of vegan or pleather. When I was young (high school) I didn't know any better and bought pleather bags. Over the years they would just literally fall apart. The cracking and flaking was horrible.
I also like the smell of real leather lol.
Plastic is only okay if it's a beach/pool bag for practicality purposes, but then again, I'm not keen on buying expensive bags made of plastic for that purpose lol.

I'm also okay if the leather is treated and embossed to look like croc or some other exotic if done well. I guess I'm okay with it because it's still leather and also I do not trust myself with exotics for the time being. I had a python bag once and the scale lifting was horrible. :crybaby:I heard that crocodile and lizard are easier to take care of but, for now, I'll just admire from afar.

Still thinking about the Gucci carry-on bag that I saw at the airport. It made me take another look at my own luggage and carry-on options. Generally, my airport style (if one can even call it that) is quite low-key. No logo or premier designer items and any purses I carry are usually tucked inside my carry-on luggage. Generally, I believe most airlines allow one carry-on (like a small wheeled suitcase), and one personal item like a purse. I noticed that some people had large totes or bags as their personal item. Which brings me to a question I have been pondering on. What purse or bag do you carry as your personal item? Do you favor a tote, a large duffle bag or a smaller handbag? Would love to hear your thoughts.
Sorry for the delayed response but if you are still contemplating good handbags that can be used as "personal item" while traveling, I have used both the YSL Icare and LV On the Go numerous times while flying and fit alot (all necessities) and still managed to fit underneath the seat in front of me. Both much easier to carry when also using a wheeled carryon and you can set bag on top while walking through the airport - otherwise can get pretty heavy and hurt shoulder after a while (I made this mistake when I was determined to go away for an overnight trip one time using ONLY the Icare and no luggage). While neither of these bags has a zipper closure, I have not had issues with things falling out. I do feel the handle on the Icare is a better design bc it's thicker than the separately attached handles on the LV (similarly, I find the skinny handles on the LV Neverfull can dig into shoulder and hurt if carrying bag so full that it's heavy). However, I do like that the On the Go more structured in retaining it's shape while sitting on top of roller luggage. On my most recent trip a few weeks ago, I was "creative" and finagled a way to use a thicker/sportier strap from another bag with the On the Go and it worked very well.

I don’t know that in the store there were others drawing me in, but on the website I am loving these.

You have such great taste! I never knew I might not be able to live without an Hermes scarf until you posted this photo (referring to the top one - Cheval Sirene). I am not a scarf person (bought a beautiful Ferragamo one I loved and have never used it) but this graphic is so cool. I love the colors and some of the other colors this design comes in are fab too. I also love that it's 2-sided but they're all so pretty, it's making it too difficult to decide which to order. I wish they were available to view in person but doesn't appear they are available in store. Did you end up ordering any of these? Would love to see pic of you wearing the one you bought. I need some inspiration on what to do with scarfs.... no idea how to style them on myself. Had same problem at Dior yesterday - I love the new Toile de Jouy Voyage collection but would feel silly not being able to pull off the scarf.
