The day's winner: a 1.37 F VS1 round brilliant in tiffany's classic solitaire setting. Price tag? $20k!!
Is it REALLY worth it to pay $20k for a 1.32 @ T&Co...With 15k, we could buy us a 1.5+ RB F VS1 at another jeweler. :shrugs:

Agree with Lori - do a search on old threads - Michael just bought his FI a Tiffany.
I think Pricescope is a great resource, but there is a very strong anti-Tiffany sentiment there. In general, I find they do not like branded diamonds.

The reality is, branded diamonds ALWAYS cost more. (Tiffany, Cartier, Van Cleef, Harry Winston, etc.) They also have better resale. The one you're looking at is VERY similar to the one DH bought for me at Tiffany - mine's a 1.37 G VVS2. I  it, and frankly, it was one of the best purchases for our wedding next to the dress, food and photographer.

For me, heck yeah, Tiffany is worth it. But then again, I only wear branded jewelry. It's not just the stone, but the experience, the service, and the whole package you pay for. It's an individual decision whether it's right for you.

thanks for all the posts and PMs  :flowers: I think we are slowly leaning towards a 15k 1.5 ct. GIA cert...We will save 5k (which is 25%!!) and I will get a larger stone...

T&CO will always be around for us to purchase from in the future, when we are more comfortable and financially stable...At least, that is what I am telling myself now :shrugs:

Go to www.pricescope.com and go look at diamonds there. They will help you. If you want to pay for the Tiffany name than I guess it is worth it but if you don't there are lots of other places to buy round brilliant stones. I bought mine from goodoldgold.

I think you are making the right choice. I once found myself in this situation too, but it was only after the ring was purchased and on my finger that I felt guilty about how much it cost + I wished I had gone with a larger stone. Go with the larger stone for less money, if its well cut, it will sparkle just the same and you will have the added satisfaction of having saved money.
:smile1:

Coming from a very jewelry-oriented family, my father would be ashamed of me for paying that much for a brand name. You can get such beautiful jewelry at FAR more reasonable prices. I do not mean to offend Tiffany fans, but I have to shake my head when I see women paying that much for a ring that is so far overpriced for what it is when they could find much better for much less.

Also, if you get a good jeweller, and buy a GIA certified diamond, they allow you to trade it in and upgrade to a bigger stone anyway.

As another boardie said, if you really want Tiffany, then you can get your wedding bands from there instead.

The $5K you saved on the engagement ring is enough for a matching wedding set

There have been a lot of threads about Tiffany specifically. If you do a search you'll find them.

For me, I got a ring that was comparable to Tiffany. If we had bought it at Tiffany it would have been about $35K. We got it for 1/3 the price and it's just as beautiful.

In the end, if you think the money is best spent elsewhere, such as a wedding or a down payment for a house, then don't purchase the ring at Tiffany.

ITA!!

When people see your ring, no one will ask where you got it:yes:

Maybe in the future *like an anniversary, etc* you could get a Tiffany's ring, but for now it seems like the extra $$ could be spent saving for your wedding, etc.

Good luck with whatever you choose--either way, it will be beautiful!!

I couldn't agree more. $20K for a 1.3K VS1 is overpriced, in my opinion. I would go elsewhere and as everybody has mentioned before, get the wedding band there if you really do want something from Tiffany.

I live in South Australia, we don't have tiff &co here!! One of our leading jewellers is Clarke the jeweller. I bought a 3.25 carat ring from him, cost us $25k. I love my ring, well worth the investment!!
I think your ring needs to make you smile.... Thats when u know u have the right one!

hi! you have asked a question that will bring out the opinions of each side of this question. you have already answered yourself, in my opinion, when you had the remorse and doubts after making the deposit. i don't know what is right for you. if you are sure that tiffany will make you happy then maybe it is what you should buy. on the other hand, diamonds are created by nature and cut and set by man. i feel that tiffany is selling a great product but they are not the only company that can do a stellar job of producing a quality product. i am not sure this is correct but i do not think tiffany cuts their own diamonds. you can purchase a stone that is of equal quality to a tiffany but you will need to research and find that stone. it is doable if you will be happy with it without the blue box and tiffany hallmark. this is a personal choice and only you can decide. congratulations on your engagement and i hope you find a great diamond.

there are plenty of threads on the tiffany vs unbranded diamonds. reading them will show you how a lot of others feel about this question.

eta: some are happy to purchase from signed pieces. they offer tiffany and other branded jewelry at good discounts since they are pre-owned. they have a good return policy. it might be worth it to take a look if you want tiffany without the premium. i have bought from them but never pre-owned. i can recommend them with no problem. i, too, recommend reading pricescope for advise. i do not find everybody there is against tiffany. there are many who wouldn't want anything but tiffany. there are also probably more who would not pay the premium.

It depends how important the little Tiffany stamp on the band is to you, because that is what you're paying for. If it makes you feel better about the ring, then go for it.

Oh and congrats!
