That is called security! I always feel like a mortgage payment is really like a savings account. I didnt feel like I could own in my early twenties mainly because I wasnt educated enough to understand that I could. It drives me nuts to see people rent if they can do otherwise.
Selena

How are you certain they can do otherwise?

And likewise, it drives me nuts when people preoccupy themselves with business that isn't their own. I guess to each her own, huh?

I'm 21, my parents own multiple homes and they would never dream of preaching about buying a home in your early twenties. Careers, fiances and husbands, all kinds of things take you all kinds of places. The longest I've stayed in one spot since leaving my parents' home is 2 years. I imagine that my career will take me from Chicago to New York to God knows where.

20-somethings with careers, especially better careers, generally aren't settled down, save the bankers who are tucked away in NYC since it's the financial capitol of the country. We're constantly trying to find better institutions or corporations to work for, and that often takes us out of state or even country.

i get what you're saying, but i have to disagree. buying a house is good advice if you can do it (if you're determined to stay in the city you're in, etc.), my boyfriend did it at 23 and he knows that he can get the money he's paid every month back in the long run, but when he was paying the same amount of money to rent an apartment, it was gone forever. it's been nothing but a positive experience thus far. he's on an excellent career track, but he wants to stay in Athens and is willing to do what he has to do to stay here. i think she was just trying to help, most people our age don't know that home ownership is possible or economical for us, even though it's not for everyone lifestyle.

and the oddest thing i've ever seen is someone wearing a fake LV waiting for a City of Athens bus (this is a fairly rural place and DEFINATELY a driving city if you can scrape together even a couple hundred bucks to buy an old, beat-up car - things are too far apart to walk)

People also think that buying and selling is so difficult. Actually you can sell your house whenever you want to, whereas if you rent you are obligated to finish out a lease. We have bought and sold two houses over the past three years. As long as you know what you are doing it really is not that big of a deal. And even if it does make a little extra work you reap a financial benefit for it!

When do you think the fake LV trend will pass and we can all dance a happy dance? Have you seen a decline in them in your area?

I think I have seen a decline in ladies carrying them here in the DC area, at least it isn't as bad as it was 2 years ago.

Honestly, I think that as long as people admire the brand, fakes aren't going anywhere. Most good fashion is copied. I've seen so many fake Hermes bags...still deosn't change the fact that I want a real one.

here where i live it seems as if noone knew about lv untill jessica simpson n madonna started sporting theres,, damn them, then fakes were popping up like crazy.

hopefully the fad will die down.
i almost liked it better when none knew who/what my bag was.

Yikes, I live in DC, and I see fakes EVERYWHERE, especially on the arms of young teens who are trying too hard to be cool. They sell them on the streets downtown and occasionally at craft fairs.

Georgetown street vendors...that's all I'm going to say.

Unfortunately, I don't think they are going to go away.

Not always true. Real estate goes in cycles. I have been upside down in a house before, and trust me it sucks to have to pay money to get OUT of your mortgage.

Obviously, real estate has been booming in a lot of areas in the US. But anyone who purchased homes in the late 80's to the mid 90's, even in CA, know that it can turn on a dime.

Renters can always get out of a lease or rental agreement. Security fees may be imposed, but it can be done.

There is no shoe that fits every foot.

I am so surprised how many of you have old cars. I personally could not buy expensive luxury items unless my kids, home and car are totally hooked up. I am lucky that I am at a point in my life were I can do all but when I was younger I never would spend money on things like handbags. No judgements..just surprised. Do alot of you rent or own? I also could never spend big bucks on bags if I rented.
I am curious as to your responses.'

I am not familiar with CA real estate but my bestfriend lives there and is experiencing the same issues.

I was just never that into cars. I keep mine clean and checked out every 6 mos (grease/oil/etc.) It's a Pontiac Grand Am which I bought from my mechanic for $700.00. No rust, it's a 1992.

I "rent" a house from my parents (and have for 20 years), I pay the real estate taxes. My parents live next door. Both houses are free and clear and will end up with my children one day - been in the family for ages.

My big expense is the childrens tuition. Plus my girl is going into high school next year and that tuition is high. The kids education is the top priority. No handbag in the world (even Uaeyah's amazing Spy's  ) could sway me from the education funds. I just couldn't spend $30,000. on a car. Just not me. I'd love to own a brand new car - but won't spend that much money on it.

My other "line" is pets. Mine all come from the shelter or have been abandoned. I love all the pets I see in the stores, but $900.00 can save alot of strays. Now the pedigree's need home too (and there is no such thing as a "bad" pet) so I harbor no ill will to anyone who owns one, but just not for me.:D

I bet your pets are darling. I always felt the ones without homes are more endearing :) Little loves that need help. They are lucky to have a good pet mommy! :)

Thank you, Selena. Our friends say that if shelters held a lottery, the winning prize would be to live in our house!

And I applaud you in taking pride in what you own and how you present yourself to others.:D
