I have yet to get an Hermes bag but really want to. I've tried all the major ones and really don't find the Birkin or Kelly all that usable. The Garden Party and Bolide seem the most user friendly.

So from you wonderful Hermes experts - what is the most usable Hermes bag in your opinion?

There are so many variables and it's such a personal choice! I have a few Hermès bags (K28/32, B25/30/35, 24/24, Herbag) and reach for a B30 almost exclusively, because:
  • I like to be able to accommodate all my EDC and maybe a scarf or a book or a bottle of wine
  • I prefer to hand carry a bag as cross body and shoulder bags eventually hurt my shoulders
  • While I have become much more adept at locking and unlocking a Kelly, it's still annoying
BUT others complain about the weight of larger bags and/or don't carry as much and/or prefer to be hands free.

Though I wouldn’t call myself an expert—not compared to some of the truly extraordinary collectors and aficionados on this forum—I have carried Hermès bags for years now, and I’m happy to share my own experience.

I find myself reaching for my Kelly bags most often. That said, the smaller Birkins are undeniably easier to use day-to-day. I don’t own a Garden Party, as its open-top design feels a touch too casual and impractical for my lifestyle.

Ultimately, one’s lifestyle is the most decisive factor in determining which Hermès bag will be most usable. Confessing a great fondness for the Kelly 25 in the Retourne style—it’s elegant and structured, yet still has a softness that suits my daily rhythm. However, I must admit that Birkins, particularly in the smaller sizes, are effortless to use—especially when you like to keep them properly closed while walking about London, as I do.

Definitely not an expert but just someone who has always loved bags - bought my first in 7th grade (but not Hermes haha).
For me, what determines usability is (A) functionality of the bag and (B) the goal/aim of the activity (including occasion and location).

Specific to H, I've found:
  • Crossbody styles are best for when I'm taking public transpo (traveling overseas and Stateside) so I'm handsfree -- my Roulis 23, Della Cav Elan, and CTG have been great as they have backpockets for fare cards, hold the essentials, easy enough to get in/out of, and yet still feel secure from pickpockets. And I can easily add a tote for shopping, groceries, extra jacket/umbrella, etc. if needed.
  • Top handle styles are preferred when I'm driving around and running errands, just grab and go -- so the Garden Party 30 and Kelly 28 have been most useful as they can hold the essentials and then some (planner, waterbottle, scarf/gloves, other sundries)
Honorable mention to a 24/24 (size 29) I got last year - it kind of fulfills multiple categories (backpocket that can fit phone, top handle and shoulder strap, roomy) and it's just a bit easier to get in/out of than the K28. But I've found that the strap is a bit thin for the size of the bag and I tend to stuff more in there - so it can feel a bit heavy sometimes.

My Bolide 31 and my Victoria 35 - imo the bolide 31 is one of the best bags ever made, as its a perfect size, you can hand/arm carry, shoulder carry and crossbody (if you switch out the strap) and it always looks elegant.

The Victoria 35 is a total workhorse, and is just a really casual, chuck everything in stylish under-the-radar bag. My only gripe with it is that the straps are a weird length - I can shoulder carry it without a coat (thinner jackets work too) but the straps are slightly too short for me to wear it shoulder carry while wearing a proper coat.
