I have a Chanel (older bag) with a very long tassel (which is connected to the drawstring at the top of the bag so it isn't removable). It's annoyingly long in fact, and I'd like to shorten it. Would you modify a bag knowing that it would dramatically decrease the bag's value, so you could be happier wearing it?

Personally not a Chanel or other designer bag. Not just because it would lower the value (as it undoubtedly would) but because there is an integrity to the design as is.

I would with a high-street bag if I intended to keep it otherwise I'd just gift/donate it.

I would! I don't even mind changing the leather color myself. There's this Chanel briefcase that I want. Good price and condition but in orange?? I bought it and will DIY turn it to black. I gotta pay attention to detail and do it slowly tho.
It's your bag, i
the world is your oyster!

One vote each way...I agree with both of you which is why I posted in the first place

I have done this with four of my Coach bags, all identical styles in different colors. I really only wear my bags crossbody and they had a permanently attached shoulder strap that stuck out at a weird angle from my body when wearing it crossbody, so I cut them all off. Much more functional for me now! Idk if I'd alter a super high end bag, though.

Thanks, the fact that it’s a Chanel does make a difference I have to admit...

I would only do it if I was 100% sure, absolutely NO doubt in my mind, that I was never going to sell it, or if I was ok with taking a significant loss in reselling it because of the alteration. But then again, it's about being happy when you wear it and there's not much point to wearing a bag you're unhappy with.

I agree!

Yes if its going to make you happy to carry the bag. Basically its the same to me when you personalize a bag with your name or initials. No bag with maybe the exception of Hermes really hold a much higher resale value. By shortening the tassel if this means loosing half the value of the bag than no. But if its not noticeable the change then maybe this might not make much of a difference to a future buyer.
