Would you keep this sapphire in original setting?

I did! It's from Burma and was my Grandmother's. Sadly I don't know the whole history of whether she inherited it or whether my grandfather gave it to her. The style of the original setting was Art Deco and my grandparents were married in 1944 so it's a little borderline whether that style was still en vogue enough to be bought new or whether it was my great grandmother's who was in her 30's during the 1920's.

Still trying to figure out buying two new half moon diamonds or doing something with the original six! Maybe something like this? https://www.brilliantearth.com/Melody-Diamond-Ring-White-Gold-BE1D617-2708200/?did=1188221&is_tab=1
to me, it looks like it could be a Ceylon sapphire - beautiful lighter blue color....lucky you!

The lab report came back Burma, but maybe it is all just opinion? Or do they do an actual test that somehow determines it? It went through a lot of tests! This is all new to me lol. I didn't know about the heating/no heating or the different countries or anything before the last couple of weeks!

well you know you have a large beautiful stone and it's not heat treated.....did the jeweler give you an opinion on the value?

I can't wait to see your new setting!! Here are a few pictures so you can get a rough idea of what a three stone half moon side stone setting might look like!!:flowers:

Well, of course your jeweler thinks adding new diamonds is best because he wants to sell them to you at a massive markup. The current arrangement is very pretty and all the stones probably have sentimental value. There must be a way to reset them all...you can always include a pave band but a halo would be too busy. The center stone is so stunning you don’t need to add anything really other than the simple side stones. Good luck and please come back and show us the reset!

I do really like the idea of looking down at all the same stones my Grandmother saw. Would you do the triangular arrangement or just like the original lined up vertically?

If those are round stones it would be very pretty in a triangular setting if the saphhire is not too wide. Otherwise the current arrangement looks great and very art deco style. Gorgeous!

if it wasn't for you saying the original setting wasn't strong enough to support the stones, I would have said leave it as-is......from what you said, it seems like fixing it would be more difficult than replacing it. In that case, I'd just use the diamonds you have. You don't need anything more with that gorgeous center stone.

Oh yes, that ring is done. I just meant should I recreate it exactly or do a triangular setup.

I’m very sentimental and I really like the notion that you would be looking at the same style that your Grandmother had. But, on the other hand adding a diamond on each side in the triangle would put your own spin on it and make it your’s. Ok, I guess I am no help. [emoji23]. It is a beautiful stone. Enjoy it in health and happiness!

I think the original setting is stunning and sophisticated. You could make it look different, but I'm not sure any change would be an improvement. I would keep the ring exactly as it is, just make the setting more secure, or build an identical new setting. I wouldn't change a thing about the style.

Thanks so much! The stone came back certified as non heat treated so now it really does need to go in a secure setting as I can't risk it falling out. The jeweler thinks a 3 stone setting would be best with a half moon diamond on either side. It's 9.5 carats and my finger is just under 4.5 so he thinks not too much on the sides and keep it timeless. I like that look, but I also wonder if I could do something with the diamonds in the original setting. Either recreate the original or use them in a triangular shape like the second picture of k*d's post? I do also like that look of a pave band and the little diamonds all the way around (like Kate Middleton's), but maybe is that too blingy and much for a ring that already might look too big on my finger?

Wow non heat treated sapphire! Thats cool! I guess given that theres wear already on the prongs then you need to reset it. May pbe reusing the gold would lower the price? Still, expect to pay some money because either way you are gonna pay for the labor cost and maybe additional gold since the old one thinned out. Congrats with your ring! I would love to own a sapphire like that but I could never afford it!

I am not gemologist but non heated Burmese sapphire is rare. Even though there’s a window in the stone, the size is a stunner. I would keep the setting and just change the casing.

That stone is gorgeous! In a setting with half moon or trapezoid diamonds it will be fabulous.

There is some controversy over testing for sapphire origin. Apparently it can be wrong, which surprised me.
