I think the major difference is that the work doesn't have a shoulder strap and of course, it's bigger. I'm about to purchase one (again!) but am a little worried about not having the shoulder strap - sometimes it comes in handy. What's nice is all that yummy leather - more than the city.

As a major City fan, I have seriously considered a Work bag, but was initially worried about my size (I am only 5' 4"). However, pics and views on this forum have led me to believe that I can carry a Work, so that will be my next purchase (i.e. possibly an '08 Turquoise). But I am only doing this, after acquiring several very lovely City bags, which I would just not be without. For me, Work before a City is not an option. Perhaps buy a City first and then consider a Work for your second bag, since I guess that you won't stop at one! All the best with your decision.
^ita. your 1st bbag should probably be the City. you can try the Work as your 2ND bbag

totally agree on this. and it's less comfy on the shoulders than the work, by the handles.

For a first timer...you just cannot go wrong with a city. My violet city was my first and she is PERFECT...perfect size, perfect leather..love the shoulder strap... start with a CITY!!! You can graduate to a Work

I love the WORK since it is a big bag and I can use it for work.. =)
BUT I think City is style you can never go wrong with.. The handle is more comfortable than the work and it comes with a detachable should strap..
I would recommend the City as your first bag =)

CITY for a first-time bag. It is the perfect size. The FIRST can be a bit too small to use daily, especially if you work. I don't like to carry too much so my CITY is usually not even half-full. I am considering "upgrading" to a WORK in the future, though!

I think I am leaning towards getting the City as my first Bbag!
Specially now that I learn (and confirm) that it's a Classic. And I am so definitely going for a Work in the very near future. I dwell in big bags most days. :blink:
