I was watching Dennis Leary's "Douchebags and Donuts" standup comedy special last night, and one of the guest comics, Adam Ferrara, made this joke: (click the link to see the video)

"I know the significance of the wedding ring. Women don't want a ring that's a symbol of the love you have for her, or represents the commitment you wanna make to her. Women want a ring that pisses off other women, because they live their entire life with this subtext of competition, this girl-on-girl violence they can never speak of because they're 'civilized creatures.' But if they could tell you what they really think, they would say to you, like, 'This is my best friend, but if life gives her something before I get it, I'll throw the b*tch under the bus.' They don't say that, so they communicate through symbols like bags, and shoes, and rings."

I tried not to laugh too hard, so as not to tip off to my boyfriend that I think this is at least partially true.

What do you think? Is he right on the money?

Hehe! Funny post. But yeah, I think you're right, there's truth to it, at least about some women. Certainly no women that I'm friends with (hopefully!). I mean, women can be catty, and that can extend into many arenas, including status symbols like engagement/wedding rings. It's like that stereotype that men tend to support each other, while women tend to backstab one another.

I'm sure it's true for some women, but not for me. Some women compete with each other with bags, shoes, jewelry, cars, etc. I think it's just silly nonsense.

It's funny but I would say no, not for me anyways. I don't get why guys don't understand that we want some great quality things regardless of what others think. Whenever we look at reveals and collections we're happy for the ladies, not wanting to throw them under the bus or anything, right? :)

I think deep down and subconsciously inside, we all want to show off a little - but not in a mean way. If this wasn't the case, there will be no reveals of any kind on PF!

Very funny, not exactly accurate, I wouldn't want to hurt or make my friends feel bad or piss them off, other women yes :amuse: ... Yes we do communicate through symbols, but so do men lol!
Thanks for posting this!

I completely agree! It is fun to show something new; however, I believe, most women do not mean to show their new baubles in a malicious way. One thing that I really enjoy about the purse forum is that we all can share our new items and not have to worry about other people's responses. If someone does not like our new item, then they do not have to comment. :p

That clip was pretty funny! And sadly true in some circles of women. I'm happy to say I don't have any friends like that!

I agree! I don't think anyone is trying to be mean or too showy with their reveals here either. I think everyone just likes to show their new goodies off here to other women who can appreciate and understand their new treasure...a lot of women's SO's could care less about a new bag, ring, or whatever lol.

I agree! No one is being outwardly mean when they reveal; they're just happy and proud of their new ______ (insert item here), and want to share the excitement with others.

Sharing goodies doesn't = trying to piss off others.
I love seeing people's new treats, hopefully they aren't trying to piss me off  If they are, it's not working!

LOL Honestly, I think it is true. If we really thought our rings only filled the purpose of symbolizing our love, would we really care about the carat size & how much it was worth? I don't think so.
