will patent always crack

I have a Suzi Smith bag from the 1960s and it's perfect. It wasn't an expensive brand at the time I don't think but it's fabulous. I don't think patent has to crack, a lot does depend on storage, certainly not extreme temperatures or too much humidity/dryness

Ugh so my fave patent coach tote just cracked today on the straps

This is my 4th patent bag- all diff textures, all from either coach or mk- all have cracked

Will anything patent inevitably crack? I still have one wallet but am feeling v discuraged about patent now

I kept trying bc it is waterproof but...

I haves Kate spade bag with patent handles. The handles cracked after three months so I exchanged it an haven't had problems with the replacement after a year. I do have three pairs of patent shoes , two Louboutins and one pair of Jimmy Choos and all three have cracked and they are not PVC. I have heard many people complain about coach patent bags cracking. Sorry about your experience.

Modern patent is different than patent from before the mid 80's.
It is a mixture of acrylic and polyurethane and is sprayed on in most cases.
Traditional patent is made with mixture containing linseed oil. The process generated millions of gallons of polluted water and is rarely used today.
Coach, MK, KS and many others use a combo of materials and manufacturing processes to keep bags at an "affordable" price point.
That being said, these materials are the SAME as in bags for Target or JCP. If you want a Bag that will last, not just a name, look around on this forum or google and you will find many quality bags in you price range. Many made in USA.

I bought a Gucci patent hysteria. does patent leather sometimes have a plastic-feel to it? How can you tell the difference between the pvc and the real deal?

If it is PVC, it will smell like plastic, and not leather. If it is leather, it will smell like leather. Your patent leather bag should be stamped somewhere, also - 'genuine' or 'real' leather.

And yes, one of the reason I dislike patent leather is that 'plastic' feel. :D

Rest assured if it's an authentic Gucci Hysteria it will be patent leather, they didn't make any vinyl/PVC versions

Thanks! I submitted it for authentication a couple of days ago but haven't seen a verdict yet. Everything on it looks legit to me, but it just feels a little funny. Maybe it's just the patent, but I'm not sure.

It smells real, not strong, but I think the hysterias are a few years old. It looks like it's only been used a couple of times and looks new. I don't see that stamp you mention. Do you know where that would live on a Gucci? Thanks for the tips!

There were unfortunately quite a few very 'good' copies of this bag so you are very wise to get it checked-out. My sister missed the Hysterias before too late and I kept my eyes open for one, some very 'good' copies at a reputable concession had me staring for a long time before I dismissed them as fakes. Anyway, I hope yours is totally he real deal

The patent leather on a Gucci Hysteria is very soft and pliable (my Hysteria clutch is glazed lizard which feels a bit thicker) the patent leather versions do indeed feel as though they could be vinyl esp since they have so little structure (I have a cheapo gym bag that doesn't feel so different). But anyway if its a Gucci Hysteria it will be leather and not vinyl, no worries.
