It’s reasonable for him to defend his wife. But the way he did it was completely unreasonable and out of line.
She wasn’t being physically attacked so no, it wasn’t reasonable imo. Impulsive and illegal? Yes.

I think she would do very well and he knows it - it's cheaper to keep her. they don't have a prenup. she knows that being Mrs Smith is much better than being the ex-Mrs Smith even if they are not together.
