Why such a steep increase on certain bags?

Also, look at the prices for the recent prada "fashion" bags - most of the non-classic leather styles are now between $2,000 - $3,000. Last week a Prada SA sent me a pic of a bag (white patchwork leather with fringe strap shown in ad in Elle) that cost $3300!!:wtf:

Chanel risked losing exclusivity by launching their Cambon line. Notice how the Cambon prices stay between $900-$1400. So Chanel wants to regain back their exclusivity by increasing the prices of their most iconic items, i.e. the classic flaps which was between $1050-$1700 initially. I also believe they want to separate themselves from the LV, Gucci and Chloe markets and be on-par with Bottega Veneta, which is the creme-de-la-creme of the Gucci Group.

I don't entirely believe the Euro vs. US$ mumbo jumbo. Currencies fluctuate too often. But the SA's tell you that to give you an explanation no-one can control.

Price hike or not, I still love my CHANEL

I agree with you. I think they wanted to preserve/regain the exclusivity of the classic bag, but IMO once they started producing all of the newer, more "on trend" styles, they broadened their target market and appealed to a different consumer anyway. Nonetheless I bought my first classic flap just before the price increase and I'm happy to have saved the extra dollars. (A head start on the next bag!)

I think it is a strategic movement decided by a new Chanel president(Unusually, she is an American women!!). She wants to regain the exclusivity and glamor which Chanel lost b/c all the other brands catch up Chanel in terms of price. Classic line which represent the whole Chanel to general publics became a easy target. I think she believes the value or price of classic lines shows the value of Chanel brand. It is wholly truth that for luxury goods, more expensive, more selling.

I asked a sales person in Chanel why the prices were increasing, she said the reason is the classic bags take a lot of time and effort to make and the leather is relatively expensive, and the demand on them is increasing. :\

even the last SA I had was surprised it was going up a lot. I was inquiring about a petit shopper last weekend and they didn't have any in!?! They were getting more shipment soon and of course it's Feb already. Then she started telling me how the prices were going up, I was like yeah isn't that one going up like $300!! Ugh I guess I'll just have to pay more now.
