Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

Yesterday I shared with my mum and sister the topic in this thread. This is exactly what my mum said.

- You hate it when your school friends judged you for buying "old dirty preloved". So DO NOT STOOP SO LOW as to judge others for whatever bags they have! And YOU BETTER study more instead of thinking about that!!" [emoji12]

I think your mom is smart.

I honestly don't understand why people would buy a fake or replica bag. It's not like I'm judging people who buy fakes, but I just don't understand their logic.

It's like, you're in a relationship with a person because you like their looks and not their personality. A fake bag or a replica isn't as good quality as the real one. And even though it's still a "good" replica, it's still not the real one. Why not just save money for the real bag? If you don't have enough money to a buy it, then don't buy it.

Bottom line.. Selling counterfeits is illegal. Anyone who buys them is dabbling in criminal activity. If I made counterfeit money and you used it, you'd be just as guilty as I was. No justification for that.
Not to mention, the counterfeit industry funds terrorism and organized crime, and it costs the US millions of dollars in lost revenue. Victimless crime??? Not even close...

Great post![emoji106]

I think people have way to strong opinions on this in my opinion. There are much worse things. Yes I own all authentic but the more this thread pops up the more I have to click and think...really? A purse someone owns bothers you to the point of disgust? You would despise a person who owned a fake? This is crossing a moral line for me, I don't know. It's like you guys are putting them up there with terrorists and pedophiles. I'm not defending fakes, but I am going to defend the fact that being a kind person also involves not judging people. This irks me a bit [emoji29]

I am not despising anyone, medeir. I am from a country where selling and buying a counterfeit is severely punished by law.
A friend of mine whose luggage was searched at the airport learnt it the hard way! He had bought a fake Chanel watch for his wife on one of his trips abroad.
The fine was huge ( twice as much as the price of a real Chanel watch) , the Customs Officers confiscated the watch of course and they told him he would be sued...

Hi Mariapia, yes I understand that it is punishable by law. However I'm not saying that it shouldn't be punished by authorities, I'm saying that some of the comments here are a bit radical. Personally, I don't think buying fakes says much about a persons character as some folks here do. It definitely should be illegal for the sake of the designers, but as for those all the way at the end of the line buying the $80 copy at say a flea market or something, I think everyone's pretty quick to judge the person behind the copy. It feels as though the argument here is being over-analyzed, no? Maybe I'm missing something.

Of course, medeir! Carrying a fake doesn't mean anything about a person's character.
A lovely young shop assistant told me once that she wanted to buy a fake LV from one of the numerous websites that sell counterfeits.
She could not afford the real one.
I told her that it was illegal, that the bag could be confiscated by the Customs and that it was better to buy a real Longchamp Le Pliage.
I didn't judge her of course.

No, you're not missing anything. I think you can have a very strong opinion that fakes are detestable without necessarily extending that judgment to the person who buys them. And I don't think that saying so goes against the spirit of this forum.

People buy fakes for so many reasons. Each has own priorities. I hope I won't ever stoop so low to judge people based on their material stuff. If I do, then I'm no better than people who judged me for carrying cheaper brand and also my non branded bags/shoes/clothes/sunglasses!

Some of my relatives are so not into bag. They don't even know what is Burberry, Saint Laurent, Loewe etc. They just buy whichever bag they like when it's time to throw away their old worn bag.

• I carried cheaper brand and also non branded bags and I get judged.
• those carried fake get judged too! Haha life is interesting.

I've never understood this, but why do people insist on buying fake knock offs of designer anything, especially bags? In my opinion I could never get any satisfaction knowing that I was toting around a fake bag or fake watch or fake anything. If I can't afford to buy it, then I'd rather buy something in my price range instead of posing like I can afford something I can't.

Some people argue that they'd rather spend their money on something else like fixing their house or going on vacation, and would rather carry a knock off instead, and then have the nerve to make fun of people that buy the real thing. What they don't realize is that people that can usually afford a real $2,000 bag, can also afford to fix they're house and go on vacation too, without having to sacrifice one for the other...it's all relative.

Buying knock off bags and seeing women with knock offs doesn't make any sense. It's like a guy wearing a fake rolex, you just can't take him seriously, or respect him for that matter. I would rather see him wearing a timex...the same applies to women. If you can't afford the bag, stick to coach or kate spade or something, right? You're fooling no one but yourself, where's the satisifaction there?

Thoughts anyone? I don't mean to stir or churn, but I just had to!:p

The OP isn't speaking about legalities - an important issue that is missed because she is too busy justifying her judgements of others.

I bought a bag back in the early 90s that was probably a fake. Don't even remember what brand it was now. I was in my early 20s, stupid and broke. But, surprisingly, that bag lasted me about five years -- and that's with carrying it every day! Back then I wasn't really up to speed on fakes and the consequences of buying one. I only knew I thought the bag was pretty and an affordable price.

Now that I'm older and wiser, I personally wouldn't buy one. An "inspired" one ... maybe. An outright fake the seller is trying to pass off as genuine? NO. That's why all my handbag purchases of late have been preloved. I got them in pristine condition at unbelievable prices. One is an LV Josephine PM for $450, and the other is a Chanel caviar hobo with tassel for $700. The rest are vintage Coach.

However, I would never look down on someone with a fake bag, because that would be hypocritical. For all I know, the person carrying the bag could have bought it for the same reasons I did in the early 90s. Honestly, most of the time when I go out, I don't pay attention to the bags other women are carrying anyway. I have more important things on my mind.
