Why Do People Buy Fake Designer Bags Or Fake Designer Anything?

I think that there are 2 types of fakes: the obvious and the not obvious.

Obvious fakes should be avoided. You're not belonging to the group of people that have the original, and if it's an obvious fake, you clearly doesn't have an eye for fashion. You're trying to belong to a higher class group but missing the mark.

If it's not an obvious fake, you could just like the style and not be able to afford the original! I don't do the fake purse thing, but I've seen people do it well (the only reason I knew it was a fake was because I was told... And I usually notice these things!)

I used to buy fakes because I was one of those people who couldn't justify spending that much money on a bag but wanted the 'look' hahaha forgive me ladies!

Then one day I bought the REAL deal and have never looked back since.

I have nothing against people who buy fakes though, heck I did it. So who am I to judge 😊

You go invest years to develop something, and patent it, and put it on the market, and then see how generous you feel if a company then diverts your intellectual property for their financial gain. I'm guessing it wouldn't be quite so okay as it seems to be with those here who support and rationalize fakes.

I don't buy fakes. But I don't look down on people who carry them. It's their money, I don't give two hoots about it.

But I would have an issue if fakes were sold as the real thing to unsuspecting customers. In ebay, I saw many LV bags that were totally fake but got sold for more than $500 and even up to thousands. That's just not right IMO. Lying to a person about the authencity of the item, and selling it for so much when the customer could have used the money for an authentic purse, is just cruel.

That is why I would be scared to buy pre-loved designer bags from Ebay.

It happened to me. The first time I bought something on ebay.
I was very naive at the time. The package arrived a few days later with no return address.....and my seller disappeared from the site immediately after the sale.
I did not know what to do.
Now I know that when buying on ebay, you have to look carefully at the seller's feedback, ask for photos etc.
I didn't renew the experience though.
The bag is somewhere in my closet, I have never used it. Can't give it to anyone either.

Fakes are so well made these days, hard to tell.

I've compared two speedys side by side and apart from the sloppy stitching on one side, there was no other way to tell it was a fake.

Scary!

I wonder what would be a sure way to tell a super fake from an authentic bag. I have considered purchasing from Malleries in the future, but how they can be so sure their bags are authentic and not super fakes. Do they work with LV, Chanel, Celine, Prada etc.? Is the serial number possibly a sure way to tell?

Plus, I heard of authentic bags being confiscated by customs claiming they are fakes and need to be destroyed...now that is a scary scenario when ordering online...

I'm not an expert so I'm not sure...hoping someone here will see this and let us both know what to look for.

I based it purely on the 'make' of the bag..stitching etc.

Yeah I heard that too about customs in certain countries.

I'd like to know how they decide it's a fake...anyone from customs here? Haha

There was one case here on TPF where a member sent an authentic denim LV to Australia and customs claimed it was a fake and they will have to destroy it! I think supposedly LV said it was fake, but the seller fought hard and with lots of contacting authorities and officials they re-authenticated the bag and confirmed it was real!
I don't want that to happen when I buy a pre-loved Chanel, LV...all the brands that are normally a bit too pricey for me .

I just know when I buy things from the US, or even if inlaws send gifts, customs always opens up everything and they hold things of value for you to pick them up and pay a fee.

They decide it´s a fake after carefully looking at everything. They know where to look.
Especially the finishings which are perfect on a real bag.
The hardware too.
The quality of the lining.
Everything counts.
On a fake there is always something wrong.

I think this is a fantasy, that real bags are even close to perfect these days, and fakes automatically have obvious flaws. People are getting real LV bags with bad stitching and logos not alined perfectly and mismatched hardware. Fake bags get through customs all the time. That's why people keep doing it, because the overwhelming majority of the time, the items will not be identified as fake, making it a very low-risk crime.

What about designers ripping each other off all the time? How come no one pulls the moral high ground card when Rebecca Minkoff and Kate Spade basically copy the Givenchy Antigona bag? Why is that kind of replica ok to carry?

This thread. If you're ok with counterfeit bags, then you're ok with counterfeit clothes, jewelry, DVDs, watches, makeup, sundries, etc. It's technically stealing. So then you're ok with stealing.
